While Trolling

I was trolling battle.net forums because well the game is down and I was bored, and I came across a thread "Rate the name above you" So I scrolled through and I rated the name before mine and then I got rated a 5/10 because it didn't sound very elvish. So I had to look (wayyyyy back) to when I came up with the name back in my old EQ days (Kenludar was originally a wood elf druid in EQ). So I found it and posted it there and I thought (for anyone interested or just curious) I would post it here too and maybe if your character names have meaning they could be shared too. So here goes: "ken" as a noun (per dictionary.reference.com) is defined as "knowledge, understanding, or cognizance; mental perception" To me it seemed fitting of the elvenrace imo. As for "Ludar" (as per wiktionary.org) means "to play, to have fun" and thats what I did/do. So when I left EQ and got introduced to wow (shortly after BC and blood elves came out) I read up on blood elves and thought it was still a fitting name, perhaps even more so. The only other name "Phillith" (my low level warlock) came from the story I actually wrote about Kenludar (aka the coruppted druid) a very long story, but one that I dont mind telling if anyone is interested. Long story short Kenludar was killed by Tunare (the goddes of Love, druid goddess) during his attempt for the curse that the gods had put on him. Years later a necromancer brought his spirit back to life in her own dark elf image and she called him Phillith (more literally phlith- meaning hate in Drow...yeah I'm that dorky). So thats pretty much it. Just thought I would share and see any other stories come up.

p.s. No my name is not really
p.s. No my name is not really Ken in real life, although I have come pretty addapt to answering to it lol
I grant thee....
7/10 for the obvious hard work you put into naming your characters. You lose points for the lack of portability between non-fantasy games (and for the block of text).
I've use The_Magistrate for over 10 years now. It all started when I was 15 and worked at a computer camp over the summer. Between programming classes, everyone (campers and teachers) would play StarCraft on the LAN. I had played CS with another handle before that, but something about SC really resonated with me. After playing the terran single player campaign, I decided to name myself The_Magistrate. During the single player campaign you're referred to as a magistrate, and I thought that was pretty cool.
I've used The_Magistrate for pretty much every online game ever since.
Names
Mine are going to sound boring now. "Ikuri" was the name of my MMO character in Star Wars Galaxies. It was just something the randomizer coughed up and I liked it so it stuck over the years.
Prior to that I always used the name "Xova"; this name actually does have a bit of backstory. One of my favorite bands is U2. U2's lead singer is Bono. Bono's original stage name was Bono Vox, which he got from the name of a hearing aid store (of all things) called Bonavox. Bonavox/Bono Vox also being Latin for "good voice". Anyway, at one point I had a website I maintained for personal use and school projects and the website URL was bonavox.org. "Bonavox" is a handle I've used for YEARS. For game characters I flipped the name around and just used the first 4 letters - Xova.
All of the other toon names are names I just made up (Kasraie, Desraie, Maiara, Xianne, Jastelle), obscure names from stories (Seiera, Seraia), or plucked from the random name generator and modified to be more feminine.
I know. Not very creative, lol. >.<
I have nothing against random
I have nothing against random names generated, I used that all the time in my earlier gaming days. Now as I aged I have become facinated with various "odd" (e.x. elvish, drow, ect. just mostly fantasy) languages. So now, even when I name my hunter pets they have unique names being that they have a meaning from a non-fictional language.
Thrack
My charecters name was, and will be again Thrack. Thack is what I got stuck with when Kib asked me to transfer over. He was nothing more than a D&D charecter, and more to the point, and NPC. Orc, Barbarian, Chaotic Good. Faithful to a fault, told everyone he was more good than they were, cause there was more Thrack than them. (he was about 6'8"). Spoke in a gravelly voice, didn't understand a lot of thing, but had a certain charm. Always charged into battle, Thracktics, oh yeah. How could that plan ever fail. He was created years ago, and people still tell stories about him, and ask me to run him again. Oh, and once, he was singing love songs on vent for my old guild. If you have never heard Thrack singing love songs, then you my friend, have never lived.
Thack.... grrrr, Thrack
Names
Get all my names from books i read, but few times name taken so i have to pick something else work well with race and class i play. Sargo wasn't my 1st pick, and i wanted Tregarth for warrior name, I used that name for everything =D. Out of the blues thought of name sargo, had todo with EQ at the time werid thinking about it now.
Mickyslick
Mickyslick is the creation of my brother actually. Back when the Guitar Hero series of games had just come out, my brother had gotten the game for PS2 and we used to play for hours. We decided to make our own rockers and I created a greasey Italian looking guy (dont worry, im italian so that isnt rascist). We were trying to come up with a name for him, when my brother said that he needed a "mob name" for a last name. He said something with slick, and Mickyslick was born.
fun game
Melyece was the character name i used for years, ever since EQ. I think I was dating a girl named Melissa at the time and just corrupted the name until it fit. I have had Melyece in every MMO I have played since, usualy as my main. When i started playing WOW Melyece was my hunter, the first character I made on this server.
Fiermi came around when i was playing EQ2. Melyece was my main (a Swashbuckler, i loved that class, such style) but once I hit end game and rolled an alt I needed more names. I came up with all of my '???mi' series of characters. I forget what Fiermi ended up being in EQ2 but when I started playing WOW full time Melyece was allready in her 40's when the rest of my friends decided to play (I'm looking at you Magechick). So I rolled a new character and co-opted the old Fiermi name for my Paladin. A tiny little Bloodelf with a big ass shield trying to intimidate the mobs while tanking, the image was amusing to me and the name seemed fitting.
Lovmi Was another name that started in EQ2 as part of the 'mi' series. When I was playing EvE Online (spaceships, PEW PEW PEW!) Melyece was my industrial / cargo ship pilot and Lovmi Tiend'r became my combat alt. Another funny in-joke to me was the thought of someone named Lovmi racing in to attack you with guns blazing. With the name lovmi Tiend'r I got accused of being an Elvis fan a lot, but people seemed to like the name.
Some more of the 'mi' series are Lustmi, Feelmi, Loathmi, Shami, Noseemi, stabmi, keelmi and i think a few more.
/lazy
I just tend to be lazy with my names, my two favorite and commonly used ones are Xyro and Divaryth. Both of which orginate from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Back when I was a freshmen and sophmore in high school, my friend let me borrow the game....it quickly turned into an addiction. I knew everything about the game...that's not an exaggeration, everthing.
But in Morrowind there's a Telavanni Sorcerer named Divaryth Fyr (There were Three Great houses in the game, the Telavanni were notorious and powerful mages). He just so happened to have the most complete set of the coolest looking and best heavy armor in the game, daedric armor (excluding legendary items). I think he had 3 pieces on his person, the rest you would have to search for around the world and find piece by piece. You could kill him and go the easy route, but I think he was part of a quest somewhere, so you would screw that up....or you could use a few of the glitchy spells in that game (Morrowind was the buggiest game I've ever played). You would use one spell to degrade his duration on the armor until it broke and went in his inventory, then you could pick pocket him and steal it and another bug spell to 'perma-calm' him, so he wouldnt stay attacking you....he was strong. Yes I'm a nerd and proud of it.
My main name though...Xyro, is also an off shoot of something from Morrowind. There was a book in Morrowind called The Castle of Xyr or The Horror of Castle Xyr, something like that. Xyr sounds cool by itself, but I figured I'd make it my own and and a 'o' at the end of it. I thought it looked cool, plus I guess technically you could pronounce it 'zero' or the PROPER way to pronounce it 'xy - ro'.
I've used other names for chracters too, but were just sporadically thought up or just an off shoot of another name. Syntor (Thought up and sounded cool for a Tauren Warrior), Solumine (An off shoot or combo of Solomon or Saruman for LOTR. I thought it sounded cool for a Pally, plus people would call me Sol for short, which is sun in other languages...kind of suiting for a Holy Pally). I've also been a fan of the name Demos Kemos, but haven't been able to use it in anything other that Eve so far...Demos Kemos was that vampire elder in one of the Blade movies...think the second one. I know I had more names in WoW, but I can't remember them now, those are the ones I liked most.
Such a computer nerd!
hehehe!!! <3!
Character Naming
Well figured I'd just make a list of why I named my characters what I did. :) I also make it a point to make all my toons names end with an "A" just so they have some sort of similarity between them.
SETHUNYA
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: Southern African
Means "bloom, flower" in Tswana.
I figured this fit Seth really well cause not only is she a tauren and close to nature and all that but she's also a druid and heals with pretty leafs and flowers. :) The name is gender specific to females as well and she's also a female tauren.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEJINA
USAGE: Japanese
Means "sleight of hand, conjuring trick, magic, juggling" in Japanese
Once again I figured this fit Tej pretty good cause she's a mage. So you know she does all that cool magic conjuring and mirror images stuff. ;)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EMARA
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: English
Meaning: Strong, dark rider, rushing horse, quick, always rising, beautiful mystery.
Emara was first derived from the word "mare," which is a horse. Emara is a simple name with a simple meaning, but it is also very unique.
The gemstone emerald is said to have influenced the pronunciation of Emara, and it is possible that the name could have also been derived from the word "emerald" as well.
It has been heard that the name was also derived from a type of plant that was able to withstand extreme environmental conditions, which is one of the reasons that the name means strong. The plant did not collapse like the other plants; it didn't bend or give in.
So ya she's not exactly a horse but you know, a cow is kinda close... >.> Anyways, she's a shaman so I figured a hardy plant that withstands extreme conditions? That sounds pretty close to what shamans do, harness the elements and the environment and use it to their strengths.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TENMA
USAGE: Japanese
Means "demon, evil spirit" in Japanese
She's a warlock, that's a pretty accurate description of a warlock lol.
All my other toon's names don't really have any meanings to them unfortunately. Got kinda lazy in the process and looking up that many names would probably have driven me insane lol.
Siopao
a steamed meat filled bun
Libentina Onceborn and Venusence
Libentina was a name I picked for my lock after changing from Moondew, my allie human to horde belf in WotLK. I chose Libentina because its the goddess Venus' surname. And furthermore a warlock bloodelf, definitely would seduce, so shes kinda the naughty side of love. Venusence is a cross between Venus and essence, she my pally so she represents the lighter side of love, the essence of beauty and justice of lust.
Onceborn my druid....Mother nature, Not having been or needing to be regenerated spiritually and shape shifts to become adaptable to their surroundings - A blessed phenomenon of nature.
What an awesome post btw Very interesting to see who takes time to think about this stuff.....Ikuri >_>.......Bono....O_O
hehehe <3!
Rejad is an anagram of my
Rejad is an anagram of my first name. That's it, really. First used it in SWG, sounded cool so I stuck with it.
Ha!
I knew your real name was Derja! *Proceeds to steal your identity via the Interwebs...*
Yep. People think it sounds
Yep. People think it sounds Indian but it's actually German, Der Ja, which means "the jar." Which is actually an old forum nickname, heh.
OMFG
CAN I HAS SUBWAY SAMMICH PLOX!!!
Re
Sinsallad is the shortened form of my "FPS days" gamertag Sinistersallad (too long for wow). Sallad is my name (Dallas) backwards.
Sin
So were we not supposed to do
So were we not supposed to do the rating thing? :(
Hmm, well let's see...
Firk was named straight out of my fevered brain.
Euphande was the random name generator's fault.
Melindra was supposed to be Melisandra, but that was taken, so I did what I could.
Liatra was supposed to be Liatris, which is a lovely purple flower, but again, I did what I could
Torito is little bull and Carnito is little meat (ahem). Both are male Taurens.
Constanza was supposed to be Constantine and a male death knight. But when I started playing with the character creation screen...he became a she, so it goes.
Misamae is a combination of a character from Death Note (Misamanne) and my favorite aunt (Meta Mae).
Unagi, Takoyaki, Katsuo, and Kaysua are all Japanese seafood. Their legacy name will doubtless be something fishy.
heh
you can google kibito to find where I got my name. Though I'll just say I liked DBZ before it showed up on cartoon network (adjusts hipster glasses).
Fulgur is latin for lightning (this is usually never a name for shaman. >.> )
Byts - Bits was taken and ppl call my main Kibbles.
Belysta - RNG. It's rarely taken though and I use it for the first female toon I roll now.
Threck - Named after my friend's hunter Thrack aka Thack
Higashi - Japanese for East. Kibito is the Kai of the East's guardian.
Zerta - RNG with slight modification
Litany - I dunno it sounded good as a pally name.
Shadydealer - In Thack's DND games we always had an NPC we called shadydealer (based off an alliance rogue poison vendor) but he was ever mysterious and possibly very powerful.
interesting enough...
interesting enough... Litany-
So yeah I guess fitting for a pally...sorry again....I'm a dork.
Legacy
Kai?
yuppers
goes well with my alt's name of Cohbra. SWEEP THE LEG!!!
Put him in a boday bag,
Put him in a boday bag, YEAAAAHHHH
BTW
I am loving this thread. And dont worry about ratings, wasn't really my point. It just got me thinking about how I came up with his name. Maybe if enough are intested we could have a place to share our full stories of our characters. In EQ I was an avid RP'er so I got really into my characters and came up with awsome stories. Just a thought but regardless keep them comming loving the reading.
etymology of Cal
I created Calador ( later Caladorean) as a name for my SCA ( society for creative anachronim) persona back in the early nineties. When I moved back to NJ and disliked most of the people within the SCA in my area, I came across WoW. Calador, Lord of the South and hero the Estrella War in 92' transformed into Caadorean, a warlock of unbelievable power and skill who later, much much later, found humility. Since moving 'Caladorean' over to SWTOR, I began using the letters ' Cala' ...' for my alts. I have liberated a few names for my alts from some of my favorite books/series.
cala'dagashi ----dagashi is the assassin society of the murgos people in the david eddings books
cala'kitara ----kitara is the 'less than good' l female character in the dragonlance books who kills storm...sigh*
My traditional online
My traditional online character names are:
Paxton (for male characters - almost always taken)
Vanessa (for female characters, almost always taken)
Marque (a funky spelling of my last name)
I use those because I just like the first two, and the last one is my name and is therefore easy to remember.
In WoW, I made Tartare because she is a tauren. All of my other characters have been named "tart-" something. They are all alternate spellings of words that begin with "tar" or "Tara" that have meanings which I've long since forgotten (generally ones that match their classes in one way or another)
My other wow characters are Graugh.. because it sounded orcish, and related names.
In SWG I played a wookiee named "bocabacca" because Chew -> mouth -> boca.
It sounded more clever when I made it.
i was drunk when i came up
i was drunk when i came up with mine

Interesting Topic
My first gaming name was actually Fahr, which was the 'soulname' of Skywise in the ElfQuest comics. However when online gaming started the first one I got into was Ultima Online (i practically camped out at the game store waiting for it to come in). I picked the name Ben-Tas because that was Gargish (the Gargoyle language in the Ultima world) for Virtue. I was Ben-Tas for a long time, specifically Ben-Tas Dragon, as I joined a sort of loose non-guild called the Ultima Dragons and everyone got the last name Dragon. Then when EQ came out I was also Bentas (couldn't hypehate) and when i got to pick a last name it wouldn't let me pick Dragon, it was locked out. So I came up with Ravenseye (I was a druid, blah blah). So for a long time my primary was Bentas Ravenseye who was also a monk in EQ2, among other games.
Then Warcraft. I didn't want Bentas to be Horde, but I wanted to be horde. Because Bentas was ALWAYS an older guy, white hair and beard. That's what he was. It didn't feel right to make him undead or whatever. I had a few characters but my first real 'main' was Storlivras. I basically jammed the keyboard for that one. I wanted it to sort of sound Lorderonean. Then I made my tauren warrior and went for the Moo theme and Moortimer. Then when I made my druid, I wanted something that sounded Tauren and Taurahe, and I went with Talarashne as it sounded Taureny but also sort of keyboard mashey.
And my beloved gnome rogue Dildo Diggins I stole from a conversation in guild chat.
!
Uh. I just.. I decided I liked the word Tranquility. Yea..
Hmm, I've got so many.
I've got 2 accounts maxxed on character creation limit. Most are using some same names since on different servers.
Nekasrof my undead Warlock. He got that name because I had spent almost an hour seeing "Name Unavailable" message so I just spelled Forsaken backwards. Sounded good for a warlock to me.
Fynk my rogue sounded like a good name for a rogue and if you do it reverse it's knyf ( knife)
Mannhiem my main toon for 6 years mage. His name came from once again unavailability of others . It was Christmas time and an ad came on TV for a christmas album by.....
Mannheim Steemroller. With angelic tunes filing the air Mannhiem was born mis spelled because I typed too fast heheh.
Thats just a couple of mine. Pretty lame compared to some of the other stories.
Oh God, Now I'm Having Flashbacks!
Elfquest, Star Wars, LoTR - stop! Ahem.
Main
Arahila is the name of a goddess in a book by Jacqueline Carey that isn't in the Kushiel's Dart series.
The Alts
Faramiran is Faramir from LoTR, long ago when I started WoW and was playing Alliance I had a human warrior by that name. Decided it would be fun to "resurrect" him as an undead rogue.
The Alts (non-guild)
Deadbank - She's undead and a bankalt
Sitbastet is ancient Egyptian for daughter of Bast and no, she's not a druid but a warlock. This is the only Alliance alt I "kept" and paid to change faction. Belf.
Icestorm is a DK, thought this was a no brainer. I've since been told there is a frost wyrm in WoW by that name. Belf.
Ashenstraza is a Tauren druid who is in reality a black dragon but she doesn't know it. I think her egg got dropped or something and a kind Tauren couple found her. As soon as they touched the egg, she transformed and an infant Tauren was hatched. Created her during a serious group attempt to restart RP on Farstriders and to make it more interesting (and fun.) A number of old peeps like me had written various fan fictions and we decided that if you could make a logical case for it, you could do it. We drew the line at god moding and having a relationship with or being closely related to an NPC (say Sylvanas.) Arahila's surname is Windrunner but like the English "cadet" branches of a family with famous members (cousins 4 or 5 times removed) Ara knows who Sylvanas is and her history, but Sylvanas has no clue who Ara is. Sadly, a very obsessed lore Nazi spent 3 or 4 months hounding, stalking, lying about and distupting the movement when it really started going and killed it. Many people transferred, some even quit WoW altogether.
Celebrindal (with the 2 dots over the a) is my Alliance Nelf mage and that's from The Simarillion, also by JRR Tolkien.
I have "place holder" alts with a few more names waiting to be created at some point.
Ah, I remember it well...
It was the year 2000. Bon Jovi reminded us all that "It's my Life," the Rams and Titans had just played a thrilling Super Bowl, and we were all relieved that Y2K didn't melt down the world. After moving to Los Angeles, in between dates with women born on the opposite ends of the world, a young oncologist, fresh-faced in his first private practice position filled his free time with the exciting new Bioware release, Baldur's Gate.
When I first popped in the game, I just came up with Tumorbane. I viewed it as exceptionally dorky from Day 1, and it always made me chuckle a little, although on some level I thought it always made sense as an avatar. I used Tumorbane in basically every other game since then, culminating in WoW. It's simple. It's dorky, but somewhat surpringly it's unique.
Well...
Since we're talking about all our character names....
I chose Ashytaka in SWTOR because I really like the movie Princess Mononoke (Miyazaki 4 life!!). I wanted to get Ashitaka which is the name of the main character, but SWTOR denied me because it contains the word 'shit' and that's a no-no! When I first heard about the legacy system, I misunderstood that you could have your legacy name be before your name, so I wanted to be 'Prince Ashytaka'. Sadly, they're only a title or last name. So 'The Magistrate Legacy' was born.
