WARNING!!! Wormheads and hoods

Bhuta - Wed, 01/11/2012 - 15:19
In case you didn't know... twil'liks don't get hood graphics.
Confirmed last night when one of thoes eye-less aliens donned the same robe as me at a quest turn in... he got a hood... I didn't.
Kinda dissapointing.

There's a lot of little
There's a lot of little things - that all add up to a big thing - that I'm not very pleased about re: SWToR. In total, SWToR just isn't 'doing it' for me.
I've got about 2 weeks before my free month runs out, I don't think I'll be resubbing until summer at the earliest.
I'll still be here
There are more than a few things that erk me too... but despite that, I'm thoroughly addicted and ain't going nowhere soon.
My biggest pet peeve... the side quests. After getting so much substance from the class and planet storylines, you get some random toolbag who wants you to go on a simple gathering or errand mission... these quest always mean fighting your way through repetative sea's of mobs and the rewards are always shitty (minus the xp). But even those quests feel more rewarding than the leveling feel of other MMO's I've played.
Idk what's going to happen when I finally max out a toon, but my experience so far tells me I will end up with a lvl50 of all 8 classes. As much time as log, that'll likely take me most of the year... considerablly longer depending on end game content.
I like it so far
But I'm still playing it like I would Kotor 3. We'll see what happens once I hit end game.
expand on that
I just haven't really noticed any detracting "little things." In fact, I've had the opposite. There have been some things that highlight bad little things in WoW...ie. in WoW if your demon kills a mob you didn't tap, it won't drop loot. I guess crafting an hearthing could be considered negative little things but I chalk that up so far to my learning curve.
This guy says it far more
This guy says it far more eloquently than I can be arsed to do...
http://auditorydepredation.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/star-wars-the-old-re...
Yes, its kinda like the gal from Hyperbole and a Half wrote it, but... once you get past that, IMO he's 110% spot-on.
so...
basically he complains that it's not innovative (it's does have all the features wow has). And actually wants to get into dialogue driven debates on morality with a player base is thinks are the cess pool of gene pool. And even though he thinks this game is terrible he played through it 8 times???
Certainly, it's not going to be for everyone
And I think it's easy to forget the monumental leaps wow has taken over the years... or FFXI, or SWG (only they killed it with the last one).
Of course, swtor isn't polished or anywhere near what it could be... it's still a baby, we're not even measuring it's age in months yet. The rest of what I read just boils down to taste/preference.
I'll not be swayed by yet another critic...
I have high hopes for improvement (i.e. free range space combat, lfg functionality etc), but as it is, I find it hella fun... it's got my attention for now (and probably a long time to follow).
Wowkiller? There's not a game out there that could kill wow. For the longest time wow has been the biggest, the best... it's had an astonishingly long shelf life... people (myself included) have devoted years to that game. Time alone is the only thing that will take the wowmachine down or a monumental fuckup on Blizz's part... but if that were going to happen, it already wouldve by now. Wow will grow old and die of natural causes... but I think THAT is still several years down the road.
interesting
but his little review backfired. After reading it, I'm excited about levelling an Imperial Agent after my Sith Inquisitor hits 50.
I like his reference to Manos Hands of Fate...a classic Mystery Science Theater 3k episode. Saying it's better than Transformers, as much as Transformers sucked, is absurd though.
Things in the review I agree with: 1. Shared disappointment that Chiss can't be Sith 2. The morality is inconsistent 3. There should be neutral gear (Luke, "is the dark side stronger?" Yoda: "no, but it's a lot stronger than neutral. Oh, and quicker, easier, more seductive") 4. Rail shooters are disappointing (although nicely can be played one-handed) compared to real X-Wing or Wing Commander style space combat. 5. Sometimes the dialog wheel is too vague and doesn't match what is actually said.
Things in the review I disagree with: pretty much everything else
Yeah, I've never even played
Yeah, I've never even played SWTOR but I thought this review seemed a bit harsh. I don't really recall anyone hating on RIFT or LOTR or Warhammer or ... It seemed like some folks appreciated some of the new and creative things they did. It's not like WoW was all that creative or innovative - it was mostly a combination of rehashed ideas from earlier MMO's. But I will give WoW credit pulling it off effectively - I would hope so after 7 years.
Much of the reviewer's complaints seemed like the old cliche: "The food was terrible and the portions were too small". There's just too many complaints combined with weak praise to come across coherently. I think it'd be fine if they wanted to say that they liked part X, but it wasn't anything exceptionally great, or even that within part X they liked this part, but not that part. But when you combine a whole bunch of likes and dislikes I don't see how you come up with seething hate. And if you did - why on earth would you play through it 8 times? I think the reviewer could have made a great point if they wanted to slam it for mediocracy -expectations unfulfilled and all that, but that's doesn't seem like what they did. Instead it struck me as overdramatic whining.
But I think the reviewer did come up with a a pretty good group of stuff for SWTOR to work on. The reviewer's specific critcism is probably accurate (I can't say - I've never played). But even if you don't agree with the conclusions the author came to, their specific complaints seem rational. I think the biggest issues for the dev's to work on will be those items that prevent their community in making the jump from a single-player/cooperative story game into a long lasting MMO. I don't doubt that the space battles will get improved at some point, but I don't think you can really fault them that much for not having it all now. How long did it take WoW to allow flying in the old country? Glitches and bugs are to be expected at this point - I think the issue is how well SWTOR developers deal with correcting them. I don't like it any more than the next guy, but as many software developers have pointed out - release 1.0 is the new beta.
The problem is assuming that
The problem is assuming that it's intended to be taken seriously in the slightest. I tried to make it as blatantly obvious that it's not to be taken seriously as I could. For God's sake I compared the community (which to dropping all hyperbole, is mostly decent upstanding people soured by an extremely irritating vocal minority) to genocide immediately after saying I don't like devaluing the word 'genocide'. It's not written as a peice of criticism, it's written to be the blogpost version of a drunken rant one expouses when his mates ask him what he thought of *insert thing here*. While those are the things I could think of off the top of my head that just irritated the hell out of me while playing the game, I wouldn't use the term 'review' anywhere near my post. It's not a review, it's an unadulterated mess of explatives and loaded analogies. If I was to review the game proper I would go into what did and did not work and how I felt the game could be improved in the future, and I most certainly wouldn't call it a "hate crime".
P.S. I played the game eight times for the same reason I did every side quest I could find. I don't drop anything and I don't like forming and opinion of something until I have seen most of it has to offer.
P.S.S. If you are currently enjoying the game, by all means, please continue to do so.
Welcome to the site
Welcome to Natural Order's site. Even if you strip away all the hyperbole, I feel like you and I are playing two different games. Sure, the game isn't perfect, but there is no perfection in this life. You also can't really complaign that it does not have the same production value as WoW, as WoW has a seven years head start with a huge budget. The only question I ask for a game is whether it is a better use of my free time than my other options, and for this game that is a yes, for now. Apparently you felt quite the same for many, many hours. I'd suggest that whenever you find the game annoying, step away and do something else for a while. If you don't feel the urge to come back, don't.
welcome, and ok then,
let me ask you a philosophical question or at least a question to better understand your perception. When you say Manos Hands of Fate is better than Transformers is it saying that for you judgement is all about expectations? For example, Transformers potentially could've been a great movie, but was just a stinker, while Manos is just a silly old low budget film and was what it was. To me, even if the Green Bay Packers play like utter crap (like they did yesterday), they are still better than the local high school team who met their potential and nearly won the state championship.
With SWTOR, yes it has it's flaws, but for whatever reason it exceeded my expectations while it apparently fell very short of yours.
Really, my biggest problem so far is
ALT A.D.D.!!!! (and naming OCD).
I've had so much trouble deciding on a main.
Love the story on the sith warrior (lvl 32), but after rolling a jedi consular (lvl 16) to play with the guild... ive found I like the playstyle mucho betterz. But I trade in pebbles for lighting going inquistor... so of the 3, my favorite is now the inquisitor... the only problem is... I've totally fucked my naming convention... my inquistor main should be bhuta, not my consular alt....
Ugh... I'm gonna have to re-roll those two. I guess a lvl 16 isn't too much of a sacrifice. Maybe 10hrs of /played.
P.S. I know this sounds crazy... but after spending 6 years with Bhuta on wow... I want to make sure I get it right the first time.
Somebody get that guy...
his binkie and a warm bottle. Geez no MMO will kill WoW agrred WoW will be the downfall of WoW. As for all the glitches and bugs he mentions big deal the game is a month out the box, WoW still crashes servers for two days implementing a patch. No MMO will ever be perfect because someone will always bitch that it doesnt allow this or I cant do that. Boo frikkin hoo. Like others said it coldnt have been all that bad if hes played through 8 times. Obviously not paying attention to storyline too much as well as having waaay too much time on his/her hands. Having your expectations set so high for something you personally think/feel an MMO should be is always going to let you down.
I've been playing on multiple toons and have enjoyed all of them, some more than others. I've loved Star Wars since being a kid, runnin around with my plastic Han Solo laser pistol with friends. You know back in the day when kids actually went outside and had imaginations. I digress heheh. As for MMO's SWTOR may have copied stuff from WoW but WoW copied stuff from someone else and tweaked it for their purposes. SWTOR will do the same. I have high hopes for the future of this game and welcome the break from WoW which had become something I logged into just for the sake of being online. It just bothers me that people who are on the fence about trying swtor are taking rants like that seriously instead of seeing if they themselves might like it. One mans garbage is another mans treasure.
Wait... I'm confused...
There seems to be a repetitve criticism about Swtor being a single person story game with coop mode... but that's the same format most MMO's use and have been wildly successful with. The only MMO I've played that wasn't that way was... FFXI. There was no soloing FFXI and it was a fucking nightmare. Waiting for ages on a group... then waiting for ages for a random loot pinata to spawn and competeing against 15 other groups also waiting... I spent all my time waiting--I loved the final fantasy series but I don't remotely miss that game. Wow has much more to offer... with the inception of lfg and pvp leveling... but I remember a time (not too long ago) that they weren't there. How do most people play wow? Even today, I'd say the vast majority quest to the level cap (with the occaisional bg/5man) then raid/pvp or whatever fits their fancy once they get there. Regardless, the majority of folks are picking a fairly solo way to GRIND that level cap out...
So how did they miss the mark?
The primary difference I see from this and all the other MMO's i've played is that Bioware has made the process REALLY enjoyable, and for the most part eliminated the grind factor (or as much as I've seen from an MMO). Did they do such a good job that it eclipses end-game/multiplayer content? Maybe... but should that take away from the social aspects of the game that have been executed very well? I think it offers just as much as any other... the imperial fleet feels like Ogri to me... heroics and flashpoints like dungeons etc... etc.. etc.. How are they missing the MMO mark? It's like 2 of my all time favorite games (wow and kotor) got together and had a baby. The only thing better would be if I could have swtor's baby... omg I want to have swtor's baby... color me a fanboy!
Cheers!
