Since about lvl 15, worlddrop/quest/heroic/flashpoint (and yes dancer's) gear has trumped anything I could craft.  I know there isn't any orange schematics available from the trainer... so I'm starting to question the usefulness of this prof.

Has anyone found a good resource for attainable schematics?

I'm wondering if there's a special vendor (ala rep vendors from wow), that sells the good stuff--or am I going to rely soley on reverse engineering and drops?

*sigh* I wish torhead would get their shit together... they could be such a great resource for this.

Most crafting professions are

Most crafting professions are like this.  If you keep leveling your crafting so it's at the same level you are, you'll likely get rewards that are similar or slightly better than random drops.  If you slack even a little bit, you'll find something else that is better.

The benefits of wearable item crafting professions come at level 50 when you can craft orange gear that crits and gives you an extra augment slot.  This makes the item better than the drops off bosses and from chests and the like.

Yeah, Bioware needs to work

Tartare's picture

Yeah, Bioware needs to work their crafting out. While its not as useless (useful gear-wise) as many games, there's still little reason to actually craft. It's why a LOT of people just take slicing instead (despite the recent "nerf")

I find arms is worth it...

... but only for the barrels for us blaster classes. There is zero reason to take it for any other purpose, or indeed to buy any other patterns.

My friend focused on crafting

Rejad's picture

My friend focused on crafting pretty hardcore while I didn't. He's mostly in green gear and never has money. I'm half in orange and always have money. Maybe its better at higher levels, in which case I'll just wait until I cap and have buckets of credits to blow. But even then I probably won't bother. People don't even seem to wanna buy the materials you can gather, something that always made money in WoW.

Crafting

I took Investigation and Underworld Trading and capped both. The mats from Underworld Trading seem to sell pretty well, especially the Mandalorian Iron and Ciridium, but I can hardly ever sell the mats I get from Investigation. I may eventually drop it and pick up something different, like Synthweaving, or something that uses the metals I get from Underworld Trading. That or take Diplomacy for companion gifts, which always sell easily.

The problem occurs...

... that you can generally end up with better gear just by using oranges and upgrading your addons than you can get questing or even in FPs, unless you hit them early for the level range... and even then, it's usually an orange loaded up with better addons. There needs to be a real look at the gear balance overall. All my quest rewards are going to my companions, which is a sad commentary.

True that

Rejad's picture

I've been taking the commendation rewards. One trip to the auction block between planets seems to do it for me. I only outfit myself and Kira, I ignore T7 and the recently acquired Doc. I've got Kira in nothing below a blue and I recently found an upgrade for my last piece of green. Quest rewards are mostly greens so I've always got waaaay better. The commendation rewards are sometimes an upgrade.

The reason

Bhuta's picture

I'm getting all pissy about synthweaving, is that my other toon has artifice.  With artifice, I'm at least able to keep my saber in upgrades with hilts and crystals.  Up to 32, I've had no trouble crafting as good or better than what the current content was throwing at me.  Granted it's usually only a few stat points up... but with synthweaving the on the level stuff is usually a few (if not several) pts behind.

I think you hit the nail on

The_Magistrate's picture

I think you hit the nail on the head.  Since armor and weapons drop from mobs all the time, synthweaving, armormech and armstech seem like worthless crafting skills.  The skills which really have a benefit are the ones which create items that only rarely drop.  Namely, artifice, cybertech and biochem.  I think the only way to fix this problem is to give big boosts to craftable armor and weapons.

And since there is an

And since there is an associated cost with every trade skill action I wonder how economically efficient it is.  I'm sure someone who's waaaay more into this stuff than I is accumulating data to measure just that.  I wondered about things like biochem but wasn't sure it would be any more cost effective than just buying the odd stim.  Plus my gear is usually so pumped up and I tank like a mofo I hardly ever need anything other than the occasional heal stim.

Mods on the exchange are usually pretty cheap.  The selection isn't always choice however.  I never felt like I was breaking the bank by buying new ones.  I've got synthweaving but it's a joke.  I've been able to buy and keep myself in really pimp gear just buying it and never felt like I was in a bad place financially.  Of course this might change with factors like inflation and scarcity as more people are at level cap and not a lot of gear is looted or crafted in the levels between 10-49.

Yep

There's no shortage of credits to be had from just playing the game (which I really appreciate).  Granted... asking this question in the high 200's seems a little late.  Hate to have to go through the cost and time of levelling yet another.  I guess I'll just hold onto it in hopes that at 50 I'll get a lucky reverse engineer schematic that looks awesome... or craft a few orange criticals with the augment slot.

Speaking of augments... where do you find them?

Augments are obtained via

The_Magistrate's picture

Augments are obtained via Slicing.  I have it and if you let me know what stats you need, I can give them to you when I get one.

On your imp toon?

Bhuta's picture

If so, Bhuta's favoring Endurnace->Willpower->Crit/Defense

I've never even seen one... it'll be interesting to find out if there's enough stats to bridge the gap between rewards/drops and crafting on them.

Crafting skills.

Flynn's picture

The way I see it, Armstech is mostly useless at this point unless you like collecting guns.  Sooner or later you WILL get orange weapons for yourself and your companions, and it's easy to keep the barrels updated with commendations.  Armortech and Synthweaving are best for keeping companions geared, and Armortech wins out just because of how few companions require Synthweaving gear.

For my four Republic-side characters, Flynn has Biochem for the obvious benefits and to supply implants, Talorin is Cybertech to supply ship parts, mods and armorings, and earpieces to companions, Tibor is Armortech to supply gear to 95% of the companions, and Damarian is Artifice for hilts and enhancements.  The only thing I'm missing out on is barrels, and those aren't hard to come by in any case.

I don't think they'll leave armor/arms/synth out in the cold too long, however.  As we've seen with Slicing, things change.  (Although I'm hearing that 1.1 slightly buffed the rewards again, making it less useless.)
