"Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else."
I totally need to sit down and watch B5 again. I was so hooked into that show when it aired.
to follow shows like that, but my dad was a big Star Trek fan and thus is rubbed off on me. I do remember watching a lot of The Next Generation and I do remember when Babalyon 5 came out, but me being a kid at the time just looked at it as a knock off of Star Trek and ST was better :P
It introduced the concept of actual continuity to SF television; instead of things always returning to the initial state at the end of every episode (or if you were lucky, two-parter) things Actually Happened in the B5 universe and the consequences shaped the story. I remember times when a throwaway line in one season would come back to be very important two and a half years later. Remember when that episode of TNG showed that a bunch of parasitic aliens had infiltrated the highest ranks of Starfleet, and then it was never mentioned again? :)
Of course, watching a show like that takes a little bit more investment than tuning in to see what shenanigans Quark is getting up to this week. There actually was a website devoted to tracking minor events in the B5 universe and pointing out the connections, and it was pretty much required for any non-obsessive fan to get the most out of the show. :) I do think that DS9's move to a more arc-based format (as well as that of other shows) owed a lot to JMS's storytelling style.
Babylon 5 is still definitely worth watching, if only to see what kind of thing is possible when you have a single creator and writer in control of a series rather than television-by-committee.
If fact what you mentioned above is the reason I could not get into it at first, I had no idea what they were talking about (when I first tried to watch it in season 2 or 3 I think).
Lucky for me when SiFi (not SyFy damn it) picked up te series and I started to watch from get go and I really got hooked, I really do need to start collecting the series on DVD.
it was a draw because from the looks of it both sides lost all their ships...but Star Trek did blow up Babylon 5 so one could say it was a strategic win for them.
Imo it seemed like a draw Jox, even though I thought Starfleet was going to come out on top, considering their numbers (They are good at focus targeting though :P). I remember Farscape, by name...never watched it though.
I dunno. I'm pretty sure Starfleet would lose in a fight, especially if they're up against the Whitestar fleet. The main reasoning being that in absolutely no Star Trek series or movie has actual gravity and inertia been used for combat; the ships move like they were in an atmosphere, whereas Babylon 5's ships are very carefully done to take advantage of space... i.e. the Starfuries doing a hard burn, flipping 180 and firing without actually slowing down or stopping. The Whitestars did exactly the same thing, prone to flipping and turning in ways the Star Trek authors never considered.
Plus, the Shadows are just more dangerous than the Borg, or that weird 8472 stuff from Voyager. I'll take a Shadow Planetkiller Cloud over the Species 8472 bioships any day, I will. Yes yes.
Because nothing says "kicking your ass" like being able to launch self-guiding missiles across half a solar system, armed with bomb-pumped laser warheads, in quantities of multiple thousands from just a few ships.
I know a bunch of friends who were fans, and I tried watching a copule times from the start, but even back then it seemed...I dunno stiff. It just didn't grab me. I plan on giving it another dedicated attempt in the future, but if it doesn't take that time then i probably won't try again.
I think I need to get at least 5-6 episodes in to give it a shot. The first few episodes just never have grabbed me before.
The first season is really uneven and has some stinkers in it. But if you can make it through, by season four I promise you B5 will be one of the best things you've ever watched.
I think I came in somewhere during season 2. I'm pretty sure I've still never seen most of season 1.
Depending on if you have someone you can ask for a decent starting point you could probably come in fairly early on, skip the really early "finding their feet" episodes and give it a go if you're still interested.
Shows up randomly, tells them ' I will give you all one chance to stop this battle, and go to separate regions of the galaxy.' When they refuse, how destroys them all in some marvelous fashion using only a screwdriver.
Me and Claera just recently started downloading it and watching it, where on the last episode of season 3 (Master, paradox machine.)
My favorite episode so far is 'Girl in the Fireplace' but the end of 'The Family of Blood' really highlights what I mean about The Doctor being badass.
Heh.

B5 blew Star Trek away.

Oh I Agree
with you 100%.

At least they don't take it too far.
Like in Andromeda, where if you missed half an episode you were COMPLETELY FUCKED FOR THE REST OF FOREVER.
um
Who won?
I believe
Star Trek did, but just barely.
Let me rephrase
it was a draw because from the looks of it both sides lost all their ships...but Star Trek did blow up Babylon 5 so one could say it was a strategic win for them.
Did anyone else else ever
Did anyone else else ever watch Farscape? I loved that show at the time lmao
Oh yeah
and I was pissed when they cancelled the show.
Another nice scifi show who bit the dust.
Draw...
Imo it seemed like a draw Jox, even though I thought Starfleet was going to come out on top, considering their numbers (They are good at focus targeting though :P). I remember Farscape, by name...never watched it though.

Royal Manticoran Navy > all

Nothing like...
Flying up to other space ships and punching the shit outta them. I mean seriously. I still love macross though. =)
Never could get into Babylon 5

I think John Kryton could
I think John Kryton could take em all. He could use wormhole weapons and make BLACKHOLES... YES ... BLACKHOLES....how ya gona fight BLACKHOLES...
The Doctor
Shows up randomly, tells them ' I will give you all one chance to stop this battle, and go to separate regions of the galaxy.' When they refuse, how destroys them all in some marvelous fashion using only a screwdriver.
I am a big fan of Babylon 5 BTW, but
The Doctor > All
Heh.
If you're not following along with the episodes as they're released in the UK, then you're going to love the episode weekend after next. :)

How many seasons?
I used to watch it when it came on SciFi, but I just rewatched all of it on netflix. Waiting on Season 5 which is a new doctor?
I'd say
Rogue Squadron figured out how to fight black-holes quite well.
personally i loved ...
Space above and Beyond
Empire, wassup?

I remember Lexx
Now that was a strange show.
