Those things are designed to kill. The squirrel took a massive blow to the head and was in obvious pain. If it survived more than an hour after that I'd be surprised. Please, in future, keep your hilarious videos of animals getting severely injured or killed to yourselves, thanks.
I'm not sure if this will help put your mind at ease, but a few points worth considering. Rat traps are designed to kill rats. Squirrels are going to be 50-100% larger than the prey intended and markedly stronger. The relative athletecism of the two is going to yield much higher bone density... not to mention their heads are basically organic nut crackers. Have you ever cracked a fresh black walnut? Squirrells do it with ease, and I have trouble with two hands and nut cracker... they're built to withstand major PSI. So I think the likelihood of a squirrel falling victim to a rat trap is a lot lower than you'd imagine... those little buggers are crazy tough. Probably hurt like hell, obviously knocked it silly (and I'm sure I'll be due some nasty hella karma for finding it's plight funny)... but I bet that little guy went on to live virtually unscathed after this encounter. That said, watching it through again I can see how someone with half a heart and a little empathy might find it upsetting--that part of me obviously broken as I thouroughly enjoyed it... but I'll second your vote of innapropriate for the N.O. masses.
I laughed, My sister laughed so hard she started tearing up. My room-mate laughed so hard he nearly fell down the stairs.
Squirrels are adorable to look at. In parks they can be charming as they come up and beg for food. But don't let them trick you, squirrels are EVIL! I have hundreds of them that live in the woods behind my house. I can watch them run around and play from my kitchen table. Cute and adorable.
However in the spring they eat all the plants in my garden. They chewed up the garden hose. They chewed the siding on my neighbors house to get at insulation or something. They have attacked neighborhood pets. They are destructive and EVIL! I have little sympathy for them anymore.
Seeing any animal in unnecessary pain is not cool. However the guy that placed that rat trap was not intending it for squirrels. I am sure that squirrel had a concusion but he seemed to get over it.
I hope that webcam came out of the squirrel attack alright.
We have squirrel problems here. Also rat problems. The rat traps have caught rats, birds, and squirrels. They do just as effective a job on squirrels as they do on rats, I guarantee. :)
I appologize if you were offended, I didn't find it hilarious, I found it shocking, sorry again for not giving you fair warning. I'm not looking for a debate on the ethical treatment of animals, so let's cut that line where it stands. If you truly believe it's innapropriate I will point out that videos on youtube can be flagged for policy breaches, of which animal abuse is one. I'll add a clearer disclaimer to the post.
I'm not looking to start a big argument on the subject either. I'd just appreciate if that type of video was one of the things we didn't post around here. (And for the record I don't consider that an animal abuse video, or that anyone posting it or not offended by it here digs seeing animals in pain or anything like that. I'm just one of those who really, really doesn't like witnessing the suffering of any living thing -- except maybe skateboarders who land on their nuts.)
(I fib. If there's a heaven, when I die I'll be watching skateboarders land on their nuts 24/7. It's my favorite thing in the world.)
Damn - we're in trouble now
Somebody built a better rat!
Someone once told me that squirrels are just rats with a better PR campain. How can anyone dislike an animal with a tail that fuzzy?
;_;
This is SO sad. That poor Squirril :( *Vomit-cry*
ROFLMAO
Come on! I saw no signs of serious injury... if you can laugh at 90% of america's funniest home videos, you can laugh at that.

Sorry that upset you

A classic.
(You'll note he slams his nuts into the guy wire so hard he not only loses his shoe, but his beanie and his headphones in the process.)
Of course, it doesn't have to be a skateboarder, just someone who made the mistake of thinking, "Man, this is gonna be cool, we better film this."
