Raiding Plan For the New Year

So this is a bit late in being posted, but between the end of school, the holidays, comp troubles, and work, I am just now getting around to this. There's a lot to go over, so I'll just get right to it.
First things first, I want to announce that I am stepping back from raid leading in WoW for Natural Order. I've been NO's raid leader for about a year and a half now, maybe longer, and it's been a great run. When I recently took a forced two-week hiatus to wrap up my thesis and deal with a busted power supply, my intention was to come back and get right back into the swing of raid leading. But I find that my heart isn't quite as in it as it used to be. I'm also horribly out of the loop as far as the new raids go, and I feel that a raid leader needs to be more prepared than her raiders when it comes to understanding encounters, being able to strategize, etc.
I spoke with Holy and Sethunya, and have asked them if they would like to step in and take over raid leading in WoW for the forseeable future. They've both agreed to, so they will be the ones responsible for putting raids on the calendar, catherding, explaining encounters, etc. They can also designate other people to help with those duties as necessary. I want to stress that I am not leaving raiding altogether. I still plan to be at WoW raids on Tues-Thurs as much as RL will allow. I also want to stress that there are still other officers participating in raiding who will be present to lend a hand and support raiding efforts. But I think I am ready for a break in duties, plus I feel that this is a good time for a change. :)
I also want to add that a change in raid leading doesn't mean a change in raid policy. Our policy is still to provide an inclusive raiding experience. That said, success in the instance does necessitate setting some minimum standards. This shouldn't be anything new since we have done this with previous tiers. I realize these are a bit late, since we've been raiding Dragon Soul as a guild for several weeks now, however I think they are necessary, and based on research and experience, I think they are reasonable. Also, big thanks to Seth and Avel for helping come up with these standards.
Dragon Soul Minimum Standards for Raiding
MINIMUM item level of about 372 for the first 4 bosses, and 378 for the remaining bosses. 372 is the minimum iLvL for LFR, so this is not an unreasonable benchmark to meet. The remaining bosses in Dragon Soul are a gear check however, so the standard is a bit higher. Both standards are easy to reach if you are wearing a mixture of gear from the new heroics, crafted epics, gear from Firelands, and Justive/Valor gear. **NOTE** My philosophy is Skill>Gear, and if a person is able to meet performance standards even though they don't meet the iLvL requirement (ie. your iLvL is 376, but you can do 28k DPS), than that's not a reason to sit them from raids. However if your performance isn't where it needs to be, and your gear level is below where it should be, you'll be asked to improve your gear. Just like Firelands was, Dragon Soul is a gear check as much as a skill check.
Gear gemmed, enchanted, and reforged. There is absolutely no excuse not to have your gear in top condition regardless of its item level. If you aren't sure what kind of gems or enchants you should be using, then ask or do some research. Ask someone else you think is knowledgable in your class. Visit sites like http://www.wowreforge.com or http://www.askmrrobot.com/ and take assessment of your gear each time you acquire a new piece. Take time to read up on your class at sites like Elitist Jerks, Tankspot, etc. and see what people are suggesting for stat weights, rotations, gear choices, etc.
Also, no PvP gear. I know that a really easy way to up your iLvL is to sneak a few pieces of PvP gear into your raiding set, but I'm telling you - don't do it. I don't care how good their stats are; PvP gear is not itemized appropriately for PvE. PvP gear stacks stamina, which you won't really need to stack (even as a tank) and has resilience, which is a wasted stat for raiding. Get gear from the heroics instead.
DPS - After doing some research, we've concluded that DPS in Dragon Soul for the first 4 bosses needs to at or above 18k. This is consistent DPS, not burst DPS, which means that you should be able to maintain a steady DPS of 18k. For comparison's sake, most dps in Firelands were performing around 18k-20k toward the end of the tier, so this should not be an unreachable goal. If you aren't doing about 18k DPS on average, then you may need to do some adjusting. For the remaining 4 bosses, the DPS requirement is a bit tougher. You need to be able to do about 26k DPS. Again this is consistent DPS, not burst DPS. Fights like Ultraxion especially require that every DPS in raid be able to pull off this amount. Even one person doing slightly less is enough to hold back the fight from progressing, unfortunately. So if you can't do 26k DPS, it may be time to re-examine rotations, ability prioritizations, cooldown usage, gear, etc.
Healers - It's hard to measure healing performance, since HPS is going to vary widely depending on the class you play. If you can't comfortably heal the HoT heroics without worrying about running out of mana or not being able to heal people than you probably don't have the HPS to do Dragon Soul. For comparison's sake, Seth has noted that she does 12-21k HPS depending on the fights. So a 13K HPS is a pretty good standard to go by for raiding especially since how they make the raids more difficult is by creating more raid damage, plus some fights give you a buff to your healing so obviously in these fights your HPS will be a lot higher. Also, be able to manage your mana. If you're still drinking after every other pull in a heroic, then mana management on fights that can last 6-10 minutes is going to be an issue.
Raid awareness - if you find yourself regularly having trouble moving even when Deadly Boss Mobs is yelling at you to do so, then that's something that needs to be worked on before you head into Dragon Soul. Every time a raid member gets caught taking damage that they didn't need to take, that's healing that has to be switched to them and taken off the tank. Any time two people fail to stand together when they get frost tombed on Hagara, that's more DPS that has to get spent on breaking people out of tombs, instead of being able to get back to dps'ing the boss. We're not asking people to be top 100 quality, but we are asking for people to show some basic raid awareness.
Beyond the above standards, the advice/info in this thread is still useful, so I recommend reading it if you haven't already.
Thanks, and see you at raid! :)

Iky needs a summons!
DPS wise - it's been a while since we had a straight out, honest to goodness dps race like we do in Ultraxion. For us dps, there's essentially no mechanics other than hit a button every so often and don't pull aggro. I don't recall something this 1-dimentional since Patchwerk. In cases like these, there's just no substitute for numbers. Fortunately, this is also a great fight to just stretch those dps legs, plan on optimal use of your cool downs (remember your dps potions) and see just what you can do.
Gearing wise, hitting all 378+ shouldn't be too hard now. They have at least 1 of every slots type of gear available from heroics and/or from justice points. If you need to hook up with some guildies to run you through a bunch of HoTs, just let us know. There's enough of us gearing alts that we can generally find a guild tank or healer to get you a quick queue. I know I ran all 7 on my alt last night in a matter of about 3 hours. The new heroics are much, much quicker than the old ZA/ZG runs were. I'd say there's not really any reason not to get as much as you can out of those before raiding. That's not even counting the new LFR, which can be a good way to get some more gear and valor points too - you only need 372 to get into the LFR, after that you may wipe a few times, but I've never seen a group not finish the run eventually. You get iLevel 378 from heroics and JP, iLevel 384 from the new LFR, and iLevel 397 from the new raids and for your JP.
While I think Iky is dead on about not using PvP gear to artificially boost your iLevel, some of the gear there can be very useful for some classes. It's highly dependant on your classes stat prioritization, but I know for Arcane mages who value Int about 3x as much as any other stat, the Conquest point (iLevel 403) gear can be better than the Heroic (iLevel 378) gear. The PvP stuff only comes with 1 secondary stat (the other is always resiliance), but the huge amounts of extra Int make up for it. This is why, even in my raiding gear, I have 2 pieces of Conquest point PvP gear. I'd only look at this option if you can back up the numbers with some really good theory crafting, or AskMrRobot or RAWR. I still had someone (non guildie) give me crap about wearing PvP gear in a LFR run last week, but I blew him away in DPS numbers, so that kinda shut him up.
@ Iky - can we still /w you endlessly during raids about something unrelated to the task at hand or should we direct that abuse to Seth and Holy now?
I haven't played WoW in
I haven't played WoW in years, but still miss Patchwerk. And slime dodging. :P
Of all the things
to nerf - they nerfed frogger. Maybe it wasn't intentional, maybe it was just a factor of health scaling with cata gear, but you can now saftely go run through the slimes all day long without getting hurt - I'm dissapointed. The bug chamber in front of putricide is the same way - I'm utterly disappointed. No more telling Malky to go disarm the trap inside or anything like that :(
Demmit N.O... burnt out yet
Demmit N.O... burnt out yet another cat herder!!! We've GOT to stop doing this. (said standing in the fire with an evil grin)
Heh
Raid leading is a pretty thankless job. I'm not sure people really realize just how stressful it can be. I know I sure didn't when Tal dumpe...err, I mean asked me to raid lead.
I enjoyed it though, and still do. But work has been picking up, and at the end of the day, I really just need to be able to mentally check out. Unfortunately, raid leading can start to feel like a second job after a while, especially if you don't have support. Even with having people like Moo, Malky, Zee, and everyone else that has helped stepped up to help with raids, it could still be stressful though! I've been leading raids here for a long time, and it felt like a good time to step back and let someone else take over, at least as far as WoW goes. Besides, that's not to say I won't pick up the duties again someday as needed, lol.
@Mage: You guys can /w me any time. <3
Edited since I didn't want to make it sound like I didn't have support, lol!
*sniffs*
Do I smell a scruffy nerf herder in the making?
omg
/petitions Tal to have her rank changed to Nerf Herder in SWTOR
there are some on alderaan
I laughed when I moused over one.

To think she was once a Jedi's Padawan
Lord Narce, stealing "talent" since lvl 30.
*evil grin*
Meh.
Jedi Knights get a Padawan that was one of "The Emperor's Children" AND a freaking immortal Sith Assassin as companions. Trump'd.
The key word was "talent"
Not only did I gank the most promising padawan in the order, but she's also romancable eye candy.

Those underlings you snatched up were our sloppy seconds... enjoy, we'll keep making more!

My Opinion
Ok here it goes..... I understand totally how Iky feels. I too am burnt out on Raiding and really love playing Star Wars. We have a really good guild on this server and we have some really good people. We did our first OPS last night (raid for those who don't play Star Wars) and it went really well.
I try to come back and help NO with Tues-Thurs raids but usually get sat because of a number of reasons. Some where I volunteer to sit. But when I said I wanted to quit, I was told no that it is not fair. Because NO is helping me get my staff. Which I totally agree. But it made me feel guilty. But I hate logging on and feeling like I HAVE to raid. Because someone will get upset.
Another thing is NO is a casual guild. Not a Raiding guild. If Iky is not there to uphold that, then I am afraid other characters are going to be sat (including myself) just because they can't pull the highest DPS or that they don't have the gear that other characters have. I am a single mother of two children, one that has Autism, and I have a very stressful and demanding job. Plus I still get called from time to time to help with my local EMS station. I don't have time to sit and worry if my gear is up to par or if something is going to get said if don't pull 20K. I think I am a good raider certainly not the best but an ok one.
One of the reasons I like this guild was from the moment I entered the guild I was given a chance to raid. Even though sometimes my DPS wasn't high enough or that I was standing in Defile too long. But I was still invited and treated like the guild needed me. I also had people reassuring me (Thanks Iky btw) It made me try harder.
So wrapping up. I understand Iky's burnt out. But I am scared at how the raids are going to turn out. I know some people want progression and are going to push it. This post by no means is a stab at no one. Please do not take it that way.
Well I'm disappointed I
Well I'm disappointed I haven't really gotten to raid with you summer, you were kinda gonna be my little project :p. And I wouldn't feel too guilty about the staff, I don't think any of us were really expecting to make a second one after Zee's.
I don't think you have to worry
Yeah, some people are more progression oriented than others, but we've always tried to make a point of running somethign that everyone can do. Sometimes that may mean that we only clear one or two of the early bosses - that's OK. If we need to dedicate a day to doing LFR as a guild, that'd be fun too. Even if we end up with a day or two dedicated toward progression, that's never really been a big part of us as a guild.
agree with Mage
There are people that are more progression-oriented, true, and there is nothing wrong with that. But one of the things we talked about when I asked Seth and Holy to take over raid scheduling was that even though some people might be progression-oriented, our guild policy is to be inclusive.
So the compromise was to set some minimum standards to ensure that the people in the raid are prepared to be there gear-wise and skill-wise, and it was emphasized that as long as people meet those expectations, they cannot be excluded from raiding. Further, the goal should be to help people improve, not exclude anyone. Everyone is valuable.
Officers will still be present to make sure that raids are running smoothly and to provide support to the people leading them, as well as make sure our guild rules and policies are being adhered to. So, have faith! It's just a change in who puts raids on the calendars, catherds, and moves things along. Not a change in overall policy. :)
:(
This is the worst post evah! My day just got a little bit sadder.
On Time
One big thing I will be enforcing on nights I am leading is "Be On Time! The majority of our raids start at 8:15pm server time. Invites generally go out about 8:05pm, and then we spend about 10 minutes "catherding". So if you plan on raiding that night, try to be on 15 minutes before we start. If you signed up and know you are going to be late, tell someone, preferably the person leading the raid for that night, or at least one of the other raiders. Don't sign up and then bail out! Keep someone informed so we can plan to move forward without you."
That is the first paragraph of the Raiding 101 Thread that everyone read as part of their introduction post and is also linked in Ikuri's first post in this thread. In our discussion with Ikuri when the changeover first was brought up, the issue of cancelling raids came up. This is something that could happen based on attendance. In short, please sign up and be on time.
