OK, so after a fairly long time running my priest, Lieamoowalkr, through dungeon after dungeon, I have started making my way through the Cata zones. I have been lvling as shadow, as I figured being able to kill things quickly is better then lvling as disc. My question is this: How will I need to change my gear to start healing in dungeons? I want to give healing a try, as when I finally reach 85 I am gonna go to healing full time. I just dont know if i need different gear or at least different stats for disc. Will I be fine healing? And, eventually, ill need someone to take a look at my talents to help me get everything all squared away, as I kinda just chose stuff randomly as I lvled up. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

bump

Just giving a bump to the thread since I want to roll a shadow priest, and maybe dabble in disc down the line (say that 5x fast!)

I've loved this priest so

Gear: You'll want gear with spirit on it. Stat priority should be Spirit and Int, then a balance of Crit, Haste and Mastery. What I did was stack Spirit and Int until I felt comfortable with my mana regen, then strived for a balance of Crit, Haste and Mastery (in that order). Crit is great for Disc Priests because your crit heals proc Divine Aegis, which is your secondary bubble shield. Haste you probably want around 12.5%. Mastery you probably want around 11 or so.

You can probably heal ok at first in your dps gear, but mana may be an issue. So I would definitely suggest reforging until you get better spirit gear. There's a neat addon called Reforgenator on Curse that may be handy.

Talent-wise, you can check out the spec I am using here: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/farstriders/ikuri/talent/primary

I run with the Atonement spec, which means that I cast Smite to heal. You don't have to take this spec and you could actually not take it and put more points in Holy if you wanted. But I honestly like this spec and think it's the best way to heal as Disc.

You can also check out the gear I am using. I have a few tier pieces now, but I'm still wearing a lot of heroic dungeon and rep gear too. It should give you a general idea of the type of gear you should go for.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask! :)

Thanks for the heads up!

Iky, your the best! So after checking out your talents, I guess mine weren't that far off. I think I have one point different so far. As for the stats, I'm gonna have to get a lot more spirit. I think right now i have 193 spirit, with 2840 intellect. I think Im not too bad with the secondary stats, Just that damn spirit.

I'm sure Ill have more questions after I run a few instances :)

Thanks Iky!!!!

This was initially voiced for

This was initially voiced for disc but I'd like to add for those considering holy.  The only noteworthy difference for those of you headed down the holy path is the re prioritization of stats post spirit and int.

Crit does SFA for holy therefore I reforge the works of it for mastery. Its still useful but I recomend the reforging.   At lower gear levels I liked haste  till i got comfortable with using "heal" in heroics but I guess your end result is to get where

INT, Spirit, Mastery, Haste, Crit as our puddle heals do so much with mastery as in raiding you tend to stay in that chakra stance.

In wrath I was all about the crit with holy concentratoin so its been a bit of a game changer for the holy folks that were used to 32% crit.  Anyway its dead moving on.

You can do the attonment spec in holy but i choose not to right now but reserve the right to revisit after i'm all covered in epics.  I'm not raiding much these days so i'm far from the authority on what you need today.

At 346 item level my gem choices are

red = 40 int

orange (techincally for yellow)= 20 int 20 mastery

Purple (technically for blue) = 20 int 20 spirit

I've still got some int / haste gems in the orange slots but i'm hesitant to drop my haste to the floor for mastery just yet.  In otherwords i'm indecisive and need more gear.  Moreover, I need to start raiding again now that things have calmed down with work and holidays are over.  I'm still playing pretty fast and loose with my stat weighting of haste and mastery but as long as you feel comfortable healing a heroic its all that matters.  I think ikuri has another post paraphrasing gear spirit till you don't run out of mana on boss fights then revisit.  Mana you don't spend can be spent on other stats.

Thanks for the help, as any

Thanks for the help, as any and all is needed as I venture into unknown/priest territory. I think i'm gonna start w/ shadow for now, as killin stuff is what I know.

Good work on the holy stuff.

Good work on the holy stuff. I had a holy spec when I started doing BC dungeons, and i would switch between holy and disc. I like holy a lot, its really engaging and there is so many ways to heal stuff. My biggest problem was that I started to get lazy haha. It was just way easier for me to throw up a shield and then just heal away. I'll probably revisit holy again, as it is really fun.
