Paris part 2

Day 3
Arc du Triumphe - a mad mad place for drivers. And a hell of a lot of steps to the top in a dizzying spiral.

We then walked from there down the Champs Elyssee (main street with lots of trees) to the Place de la Concorde. During the Revolution this is where they had the guillotine. The obelisk that is there now is from Luxor and I think 3000 years old. Place de la Concorde opens out onto the Tuileries garden and then onto the Louvre. The size of the Louvre is massive. It started life as a castle and later became a palace and kept growing.

Saw some famous things in the Louvre, including the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa.

I thought of the Horde when I sawy this ? stein (whatever the hell it is).

Day 4 started in the Mont Martre district, and we walked from the Moulin Rouge, to Sacre Coeur, another beautiful church.

A graveyard on the way was full of lovely statues and very serene.

Day 5
Off to another tomb, this one for Napoleon. It is housed in the Dome Church, part of Les Invalides - a complex of buildings housing several massive military museums. The WWII stuff seemed tame compared to the one in Ottawa, but the Napoleonic era was amazing.

Some interesting pistols. The little guys here are basically keychain size.
Here is where Napoleon is buried, a very large domed building. He is in 7 or so coffins nested in each other and in the middle. Truly immense.

Around the corner from Invalides was the Rodin Museum, in an old 'hotel' (more like a chateau) and containing much of his work.
