Kara

with Mt. Hyjal being a close second.

*Edit*

The two big things I liked about Kara was the randomness of the Oprea event and taking a "break" with the Chess event.

Add a cool atomsphere, fun bosses, a story line, and quests to boot it is a clear winner for me.

Considering

I've only seen all of Kara, and parts of SSC, The Eye (or Sunwell... where ever the Phoenix drops), and BT... I'm probably under qualified to cast a vote.

But by far Kara stands out as the most unique... and would be my "all time" winner so far.

Ogg's picture

Underqualified as well...

I've only seen Kara and ZA as a 70, and Hyjal as an 80. Of the three, Kara has the most atmosphere and is a cool and creepy haunted mansion... gets my vote.

I vote Kara

Karazhan to me is the epitome of Raid-Done-Right. First of all there was attunement, enough that assured that the person entering Kara wasn't a complete loser like a level 68 Druid along for free gear. They removed that of course, but initially you had to run a number of solo quests, and heroic dungeons, some fully, some partially, in order to get the quest. This progressed a storyline through the whole world, across 2 worlds and both continents on the old world, and a number of max level dungeons which set up the world and cohesive storyline which would come into play in later raids even more. The whole point being one big gear check at the end with Black Morass to see if your'e ready to go into Karazhan, and finally getting the key if you survived. That along with the faction rep, limited faction items, and a couple of quest chains following through the place leading up into and to the final boss of the instance. You knew why you were there, you knew what the place was, and you knew what you were facing. Plus the variety of challenges in the boss fights, and trash made it a fun and challenging instance. Plus it was just really really well done.

Gruul's Lair lacked the quests and faction. It was more the 'hey this is the first 25 man raid instance' thingy. Yeah there was some stuff in Blades Edge that pointed to it, an dyou had to get his kids etc, and it was certainly a challenging instance, and not too long....but the lack of attunement, questlines, and faction drew away from it. It was  a place to get Tier gear.

Matheridon's Lair pretty much the same as Gruul's but even quicker. A fight that required 5 people to fucking pay attention, and that didn't always happen. On the whole though not to hard, and also kinda pointless. It capped off the Hellfire Ramparts, Blood Furnace, Shattered Halls quests and instances which was neat though so I'd give this a boost above Gruul's.

Zul'Aman didn't have faction, but it did have quests at least. It was challenging, we never got that timed run down for Bear mounts in time, and had some interesting stuff. The last fight was a right bitch and I'd say that was the second most impressive thing I"ve seen this guild raid down. I'd put this up there above Gruul's and Mags.

Serpentshrine Cavern had lots of story, had attunement, and some quests for various other lines and attunements, and killing Lady Vashj at the end at 70 was brutal but really amazing when we did it and even more impressed by the guilds who did it before it was nerfed. Capped off the coilfang instances, and tied that stuff together, and led effectively into TK

TK The Eye was also tied in with quests and BT attunement. Capped off the TK instances, and had a few really amazing boss fights. We never cleared it as aguild at 70, and Kael'thas would have been just nuts. A little too pink for my tastes as that TK architecture was kind of annoying though and the trash was just simply brutal.

Mount Hyjal I would probably put second. You get to particpate in lore from Warcraft 3. you have questlines and faction and faction rewards just for the instance, and some pretty damn cool bossfights, and movement through the instance. Outdoor raids are pretty damn cool imho. Still it all led into

Black Temple which I wasn't very fond of. I did 2 or 3 bosses in here back at 70, and finished the instance at 80, and still blech. Lots of questlines led to it, It's own faction and rewards, and tied in storyline, quests through other raids leading up to it, opening it up through attunment, and then it was MASSIVE with lots of bosses and even more trash. Brutal. I didn't like the look of the place, and I think it was a bit on the 'hard' side for me at my level of play which made it a bit unenjoyable.

Sunwell I only died in at 70. We haven't even finished it at 80 it's that serious You need people to pay attnetion. Maybe somedahy i can get 20 80's to go int here and pay attnetion and not think it's lawl70 and finish it out. However what Isaw was pretty cool. Not enough quests through it, and not enoguh faction, but the whole island and dailies surrounded it and led into it which was neat. Very pretty, and cool story, but I stil haven't finished it.

So yeah I'd say Kara was great, but all of them did well in leading into each other, and up to the final raids like BT.

Kara is still my favourite.

Every once in a while I'll be in an instance and look behind me to see if the netherspite trash pulled.

Eventually I'd also like to see the end of Sunwell. It ties in the lore from some of the novels and comics. I don't know if there's any actual quests pointing you inside or if you're just supposed to assume "DEMONS BAD" but it'd be nice to see the dialog and stuff at the end.

I'd love to finish Sunwell one of these days

but yeah, it needs a crew that pays attention and doesn't fuck around.

I might schedule mondays for more old raids

Sunwell every monday until we clear it? Then cycle through the older raids that have rep so that we can get the completeists in there on a regular basis and farm up that rep for them to exalted?

Me too!

I was just thinking about this. I sitll want to do run BWL again. I think that's my favorite raid.

Bhut would love to see all of this stuff.  Also, would love to see someone from NO on a Phoenix (even if it's not me), I know that's a wish and a prayer... but I have seen it drop, it does happen *grins*.

Sunwell sounds good; yes on old school raiding

I liked the fact that Kara had quests/faction rep associated with it. The attunement can go suck itself; not a fan of long attunements/key quests. By the time I got around to getting the key, no one wanted to do it, they'd done all that stuff a billion times before. So screw it. If I was going to add anything to Kara I would throw in a couple more repair guys (I really like that ogre at Ulduar; very handy) and some additional teleporters. The corpse runs can get kind of long. Because I got lost in there so much, I want a mini-pet, much like the Oracles/Frenzyheart have where I choose which boss I'm running back to, and it will guide me there.

Same thing for ZA--repairs available inside the instance, mini-pet to get my sorry ass back to the dragonhawk boss, and I liked the quests associated with the instance. I tend to really like troll instances, and I also like the craziness of a timed run. I don't think I can ever fight the dragonhawk boss without hearing Sev's voice...ah, the memories.

I like Gruul's okay, once the everlasting talking is over and we go kill things. I like the Lady Vashj fight in SSC.

Ugh.. that drove me up the wall

Unqualified to vote here.

Unqualified to vote here.  I started WoW in April 2008.  Not real sure where they were at in terms of patches at the time, but I'd say 2.3 was out by the time I hit 70.  For the most part that was before I was in N.O.  We had a 5-man guild of friends from work - which was really cool, but didn't give us any options for raiding (in fact, just cooridnating to run a 5-man was a pain).

So I spent most of TBC running around BG grinding honor to get PvP gear to do 5-mans.  It seems odd to say it now - but for someone comming in mid expantion the PvP gear was pretty easy to get and better in many ways then a lot of the heroic/early badge gear.  I still remember Aeric explaining the basics of 5-man's in SFK.  The first time we got 5 of us together and I didn't even understand what the difference was between a tank and a healer.  I'm not sure I progressed much farther by the time we made it to 70.

So I had done very few 5-mans and even fewer heroics.  I think I went into Kara one time before the big 2.4 nerf.  Up to that I had only pug'd my way through the horseman.  :(

I joined N.O. at the very end of TBC.  I remember feeling very lucky to get a slot into Kara.  It was pretty awsome - I think I was like the kid in the candy store running through there.  I had pretty much done all the quests to get my own key, but I know I didn't have it the first 2 times I went there.  Still it was really awsome to clear that instance.

My first "real" raid was when we cleared SSC.  I still had no idea what I was doing, but it was fun to see 25-people working together.  I remember I had to respec away from my 0-0-61 all frost build because 1/2 the critters were immune to all my DPS.  So for that whole fight I was pretty clueless as to what I was doing - even more so than normal.  I don't even think I had my tool bar set up for that fight.

After that I went back into Kara for my 3rd time and we cleared it with 7 people.  That's when I was just starting to understand the basics of my class and how to play it.
