Windows did an automatic update about four days ago and the .NET program was updated. Every time MS updates Windows, I spend a half day trying to get back on-line and the last couple of times I had to do a restore back to a day prior to the download. After a couple of days, MS fixes the problem and I redownload the update and go on with my life.

Not this time.

Something is broken or screwed up with .NET and IA STOREICONS (I think that's what it's called.) I can't download the .NET update, use PSE or Curse to update addons because the "temp" folder permissions have been changed. WTF? I'm told I can go to properties and change that but can't bring up anything to do that.

Any ideas? I really don't want to call MS and I need to be able to download files for tax purposes and such.

UPDATE: I have reloaded, repaired, you name it. Here is the message I get when I try to download: C:\Users\Arahila\AppData\Local\Temp ould not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.

WTF does that mean? I tried going to IE and couldn't find anything about folders. I am the only user and system admin. (Screenshots would be cool.)

From my reply at the bottom:

I don't use Explorer but Firefox and WoW is on my book drive.

Generally the first thing I do when this happens is to restore and the problem usually gets fixed.

I will open Explorer and see if I can change the permissions (why did they change in the first place?) since I can't reinstall .Net because I can't save to the temp folder which stops all downloads.

Thanks all, please cross those fingers.

UPDATE: I have repaired .NET, the IA STOREICONS is still broken and I still get the the "temp" folder permissions have been changed. I looked in Explorer and didn't see anything about folders, but since I don't use IE, I may have missed it. So, I can't download some things or use any programs like PSE that are web-based and I need to get these working again. Curse keeps saying there is an issue with either AVG or .NET and I have posted on their forums to see if I can get that fixed. HELP! Please look at the bold error message above. I now have links to all sorts of things to repair, etc , but can't download the damn things...

Solved at last - Many thanks to Ikuri! Your post got me where I could down load what I needed to fix the problem. /salute!

So you can't open the Explorer to navigate folders and stuff?

Can you use Windows System Restore to revert back to the restore point before you did the Windows Update?

If it's happening EVERY time

Something's busted...

I'd back er up and torch it (read: reformat).  May take 6hrs on the long side, but will probably be a LOT less bothersome than spending a 1/2 day every time windows updates (like 1-2x weekly).

Good Luck!

I'd

I'd install WoW in C:\Users\Public\Games. Dragging WoW from its current location should be enough, as long as you update your launcher links to point to the new location of Wow.exe. That will prevent permissions issues from interfering with warcraft. You will have to set curse to look in the new location (or install you addons manually).

You can try fixing .Net by uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Ok, but...

UPDATE: I have reloaded, repaired, you name it. Here is the message I get when I try to download: C:\Users\Arahila\AppData\Local\Temp could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.

Not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer, which is the default system used to view your computers files. AppData is usually a hidden file, so to mess with it you probably need to enable viewing it.

Go to your Start Menu, right click on it, and select Open Windows Explorer. This opens up an Explorer view of your computer files.

On the left pane, find the file Local Disk (C:). Select it. At the top of the window, click on Organize to bring up a drop-down menu, then select Folder and Search Options.

On the small window that opens, select the View tab. Under Advanced Settings, look for "Hidden files and folders" and click the bubble next to "Show hidden files, folders and drives". Click Apply, then Ok.

Now on the Windows Explorer window, go back to Local Disk (C:) and expand it by clicking the arrow next to the drive name. Then find the Users folder and expand it. Then find the Arahila folder and expand it. You should see the AppData folder there now.

Expand the AppData folder, then the Local folder, then Temp. Right click the Temp folder and select Properties. On the new window, select the Security tab. That's where you can change the permissions if need be.

Beyond that, just doing a google search on your problem suggested it has to do either with trying to download on a non-Admin account, or that Windows hasn't given you permission to access the folders for the programs you are trying to use (supposedly clicking on the program folders in Windows Explorer prompts Windows to ask if you want permissions?) Someone else might have more insight along those lines.

Thanks Ikuri!

Thanks for explanation! I haven't purchased a Windows 7 Bible due to budget constraints which is what I sued to troubleshoot XP. I only have the one, admin account but the "bug" is forcing the creation of a temp account near as I can tell. Will try your solution and get back to you.

Be safe

Nuke it from orbit.

Seriously, back up your data to DVD's or a USB drive, then blow away and reformat the whole drive, reinstall windows, and start over. Chances are there is "something less savory" on your drive that you will never be able to get rid of.

Sometimes the most radical solution is the best solution. And, when it comes to fixing windows, the easiest solution. You can send hours, even days, trying to track down and kill the virus that is (likely) on your computer. Or you can spend 4 to 6 hours, reformat and reinstall, and be sure that the issue is fixed.

You should never have to roll back windows updates and work without them. Those updates are very important.

My computer so much as looks at me funny and the bitch is toast (as in refomated).  I suggest doing this annually even if it seems to be running fine.  Take this with a grain of salt, cause I'm anal about my pc's performance...  if you're okay with fair performance, just blow it up when it asks for it (like now).

Spy/malware, viruses, etc don't want to be found... with just moderate surfing you're gonna pick up shit you don't want on your machine... shit that will inevitably mess with your performance.  Downloading programs, opening attachements etc, exponentially increases your risk for these kind of problems and even the best protection software can't keep it all out.

Nuking is your best defense.
