*MUST READ* Raiding 101 (Updated for Cataclysm)

I didn't want this to seem like a "raiding rules" post, but more like a guide on how to be the best raider you can be. Although we're a casual guild, we do like to raid, and we are trying to progress, so it's helpful if everyone is on the same page as far as what the minimum standards for raiding should be.
In other words, that is my PC way of saying "read this post and do what it says so I don't have to yell at you next raid night". <3
So with that, this is my "Raiding 101" guide on how to be a good part of the raiding team.
Basic Raiding Do's (and some Don't's)
Be On Time! The majority of our raids start at 8:15pm server time. Invites generally go out about 8:05pm, and then we spend about 10 minutes "catherding". So if you plan on raiding that night, try to be on 15 minutes before we start. If you signed up and know you are going to be late, tell someone, preferably the person leading the raid for that night, or at least one of the other raiders. Don't sign up and then bail out! Keep someone informed so we can plan to move forward without you.
Be Prepared! At bare minimum, you should try to have the following in place before you group up for raiding:
- Flasks Elixirs, or Potions. Enough to last 2-3 hours. If you aren't sure what to bring, here's a list of flasks, potions, and elixirs you might want to consider bringing. And any of the guild alchemists can make them for you if you just ask. :)
- Stat food. Although we frequently provide food at our raids, it's a good idea to bring along some of your favorite stat food just in case. For a list of stat foods, check this list, and ask one of the guild chefs if they will make you some. :)
- Reagents. If your class has an ability that requires a reagent, then it's your responsibility to have a good supply of those reagents on hand. How many you carry is up to you, but try to have enough to last a 2-3 hour raid. For a list of reagents used by spells or abilities, check this list, and then visit your local reagent vendor to stock up!
- Your gear repaired. This should be a no-brainer. Before heading to the raid, stop by a repair vendor and get your gear repaired!
Be Geared! After spending some time going over World of Log reports and assessing our own performance, I'm revising the standards I initially set for Firelands progression.
MINIMUM item level of about 355-360. This means you're in a mixture of epic gear from troll instances, crafted epics, T11 gear, Justice/Valor epics. You should have your 365 cloak from the Hyjal questline. The majority of your gear should be iLvL 353 or higher. **NOTE** I know some people may have a few 346 blues still. That's fine, as long as you can meet or exceed the minimum standards for performance. Firelands is a gear check as much as it is a skill check.
Gear gemmed, enchanted, and reforged if necessary. There's absolutely no excuse not to have your gear in top contidition regardless of its item level. If you aren't sure what kind of gems or enchants you should be using, then ask or do some research. Ask a Commissar, or someone else you think is knowledgable in your class. Visit sites like http://www.wowreforge.com or http://wow-heroes.com/character/ and take assessment of your gear each time you acquire a new piece. Take time to read up on your class at sites like Elitist Jerks and see what people are suggesting for stat weights, rotations, gear choices, etc.
DPS - After reviewing combat logs, I've concluded that DPS in Firelands needs to at or above 12k. I know that might seem like a lot, but truthfully that's what we should be pulling on average in Firelands (some of our DPS is pulling as high as 20k on certain encounters.) So if you aren't doing about 12k DPS on average, then you may need to do some adjusting. Many of the boss fights in Firelands have soft enrages where the fight comes down to a DPS burn - kill the boss before his encounter mechanics kill us. So being able to put out that much DPS is essential to the raids success. For previous tier content, DPS around 9k-10k should be sufficient.
Healers - it's hard to measure healing performance, since HPS is going to vary widely depending on the class you play. However if you can't comfortably heal a troll instance without too much difficulty, then you may need to adjust things or gear up a bit before heading to Firelands. Also, be able to manage your mana. If you're still drinking after every other pull in a heroic, then mana management on fights that can last 6-10 minutes is going to be an issue.
Raid awareness - if you find yourself regularly having trouble moving even when Deadly Boss Mobs is yelling at you to do so, then that's something that needs to be worked on before you head into Firelands. Every time a raid member gets caught taking damage that they didn't need to take, that's healing that has to be switched to them and taken off the tank. Any time a raider gets caught in a crystal trap on Shannox for example, that's DPS that has to be wasted on breaking a trap instead of being on the boss where it needs to be. I'm not asking people to be Ensidia or Paragon quality - I'm just asking for people to show some basic raid awareness.
Be Knowledgeable! You aren't expected to be an expert on all of the fights we're going to face, but it is helpful if you have a general idea of what to expect. At a bare minimum, reading up about encounters is a good idea. Watching a video about the encounters is even better. Some places to do a little pre-raid research:
- Wowhead - look up the bosses and read the descriptions of them. The comments section at Wowhead is also useful.
- Tankspot - this site has wonderful walkthroughs and videos in their Strategy Forum on various raid bosses and it's highly recommended that you check them out as part of your raiding research.
Be knowledgeable about your class too! Know what group utilities are at your disposal and be prepared to use them as you may be called to dispel something, or provide a temporary buff, or use a certain ability on a mob. Know your ability rotations and make use of them. Know what buffs you bring to the table and be prepared to give them out as needed.
Be Up-To-Date With Addons! The three main addons you should have for raiding are Deadly Boss Mobs (or similar), Omen Threat Meter (or similar) and EPGP / EPGP Lootmaster (for loot). Can you use other addons? Sure! But these four are mandatory. That means you should have them installed, no ifs, ands or buts. I also strongly recommend getting the addon GTFO.
Be Connected! Get the Mumble Client, and log into it. You don't have to talk, but you do need to be connected to it for raids as 99% of our raid directions are given out in Mumble. Our Mumble information is posted on the in-game Guild Information tab. If you need help setting it up, ask!
Be Available, and Be Communicative! One of my biggest pet peeves as a raid leader is trying to get a raid together, needing a certain class, or more people, and finding out that people can't go on a scheduled raid night because they got themselves saved during the week. Or in a worst case, I remember one night being short a shaman for an ICC raid, when we had a shaman online in the guild that was raiding ICC with another group. Here's the deal then: Save your raid lockouts for the guild, especially if you play a class/role that is often needed. If you can't, because of schedule conflicts or whatever, but you still plan to raid, then please let someone know that you aren't going to be available on a scheduled night and will be running with another group. If you do sign up for a raid with the guild and aren't positive about attending, sign yourself up as tentative. Schedules differ, playtimes don't always match up, and RL happens - we get that! Just keep the lines of communication open. :)
Be Positive! We're not perfect. We make mistakes. We will, and do, wipe on bosses that might have been downed easily before. Failures can be frustrating, but the bottom line is this is a game, and our primary objective isn't to be a "world-firsts" type of guild, but rather to have fun. So bring your positive attitude and be prepared to have a good time!
How you can help the raiding effort!
I get asked a lot by members, "What does the guild need for raiding?" The idea here being that members would like to contribute materials and crafted goods to help with our raiding effort. So how can you help? Here's some suggestions:
1. Level your cooking. High level cooks can place group feasts down, and nothing is more embarassing than getting a raid together and discovering no one has the ability to place feasts. Awkward!
2. Fish! Fish are used in a lot of recipes, plus the more fish you catch from pools, the faster we'll be able to make Recipe: Seafood Magnifique Feast
3. Donate alchemy/cooking materials. Here's a list of endgame crafting materials that we will need a lot of for consumables:
- Volatile Life
- Azshara's Veil
- Whiptail
- Twilight Jasmine
- Cinderbloom
- Heartblossom
- Stormvine
- Highland Guppy
- Lavascale Catfish
- Fathom Eel
The items below are also useful, if you have them to spare:
- Fish (from Cata zones)
- Meat (from Cata mobs)
- Embersilk Cloth
- BoE gear/recipes from Cataclysm zones
- Pyrite ore
- Elementium ore
- Obsidium ore
- Volatile Water
- Volatile Air
- Volatile Fire
- Volatile Earth
- Savage Leather
- Blackened Dragonscale
- Pristine Hide
- Herbs (all levels) for ink-making
- Uncut gems (Cata gems only)
Are you a high level crafter? Then consider making any of the following to contribute to the guild:
- Enchantment scrolls
- Weapon, shield and offhand enhancements
- Gylphs
- Leg armor enhancements
- Spellthread for casters' pants
- Stat food
- Cut rare gems, meta gems, and epic gems
- Flasks, potions, and elixirs
Think I missed something? Post below and add in your own thoughts. :)

I think it's covered, smothered in country gravy, and topped off with the crispy bacon bits :)
Don't Forget
Ah, nows I understands!
Flowchart ftw.
Clearly, I've been doing it wrong...
ofc, if you followed this chart, you'd never make it through a pug.
Shhhh!
Waka you're giving away healer secrets!
I've always loved this chart.
I've always loved this chart. You can have has heals.
EPGP Lootmaster
I need to bring those back over. YOu don't need just EPGP but EPGP Lootmaster. It's what we use to do looting. If you don't have it things will be difficult for you and not as transparent.
Thanks!
I was wondering about that! Thanks for clarifying! I edited it in to the "mandatory" list. :)
Oh yeah, one last thing to Mention...
Push to talk on Vent...
we all know why quick books, is better than quicken....
Group selection question
Hey guys, just a quick question about how groups are selected. I know I've only been here almost a week, but I see already we usually have more people signed up, than can go. But last night I missed my invite because I was afk for just a few min, but then afterwards I saw people in the group that were never even signed up, even though I was signed up since the 6th or 7th. I understand if you guys are doing progression, it's not fair to take a slot from someone who's been in the guild for a long time.
But are groups selected on first come, first serve...seniority...gear...rotation? Would it also be possible to have multiple groups for one raid? I know most of the knowledgable people would be in group 1, I'd love to help lead another group, but unfortunately I'm not familar with any of the 10/25s, besides VoA and ToC XD
Depends on what we're doing
last night for instance we were doing Firefighter which honestly was about 100% me picking the group I thought could win, so we could get the fight down and get the Algalon key finished and ready to go. What order signups etc had nothing to do with it. I wanted the most experieince and gear I could get and the right balance of classes etc.
Now for tonight 25 man if you are online at 8:05 around when I do first invites, I can pretty much guarnatee you'll raid tonight. We rarely have too many for 25 man and even when we do there are always some people just not all that into going that night and are willing to sit, or they show up late, etc. If you're there around 8-8:05 and are signed up and accept the invitiation to the raid, you'll go.
Generally same basic thing for thursdays. we've been doing 2 10 mans and we sometimes sit people, or ask people to sit etc, but if you show up on time, early, and accept the invite you'll probably get to go.
Wednesdays and Saturdays for 10 man stuff I don't know how it works, as I don't play those nights. for ToC though I think the hope is for people who need the gear and experieince the most to go, and have people who are sole characters have priority over alts, but signups are important as well.
I think just signup for what you want, on raid nights be sure you're online by 8:05pm Server, and ready to accept the raid invite, pay attention in vent in case the raid is already created, or just ask if it is. If it is, then ask for an invite, get in vent and ask for one, etc. Pester. Cat herding sometimes I miss people's messages in chat, but if you make enough noise we'll find you. Nobody will intentionally ignore you. Just make more noise if you'r enot being heard. ;)
Anyway if you do that you'll go on alot of raids. If you show up late, 8:15 or 8:20 you'll probably miss more than you go to, and on some nights for single 10 mans we just have too many, and the raid leader shoudl really ask people if anyone wants to volunteer to sit before they start dumping people.
There's lots of opportunities. Just sign up, show up early, and be loud about getting invites and you should be golden. ;)
Yup, yup...
If i'm raiding, i'm usually on 15 mins Prior to raid, with pots, elixirs, buff foods, repaired and ready...
LoL
Gotcha, well being on before hand is no issue for me...I guess it's one of the perks of being unemployed :P But I'll remember not to go grab something to eat during the invite times for next time *facepalm*. I also have no problem sitting out when need be, I don't want to bring down the group with my lack of experience or knowledge on a said raid, but at the same time, I don't wanna be looked at as a permanent bench warmer lol. I would like to become familiar with these raids myself, considering it's a major part of higher level game play and gearing.
As things Progress..
Now with the exception of Saufang, Siopao doesn't need anything off Lower Spire, and i'll be Happy to Sit out so other Hunters, or DpS have a chance at gear.
Ditto
Tal pretty much explains it. Last night was Mimiron Firefighter, which was a special case. We've been working on getting the Ulduar hardmodes down for the last couple of months, and that meant taking a team of specific people. There's no slight intended if you didn't go - it was just a case of taking a group that has already been working on it for a while and had the best shot of defeating the encounter.
Tuesdays when we do 25 man raiding, like Tal said, if you show up on time when invites go out, you will most likely go. If we do have too many people, there's plenty of others that are willing to sit in favor of letting someone new get to go. That's one thing about NO is that we're pretty cool about willingly stepping out when needed (sometimes to the point of /rolling to see who gets to sit out, lol.)
Thursdays we run the 10 mans, and try to get as many people that want to go into groups where they can get something accomplished. Sometimes it's a 10 man progression and a 10 man farming. Other times it's two farming groups, or two progression groups. And if we have more than that, we might send a group to the ICC 5 mans to farm for gear upgrades and emblems.
Wednesdays are kind of "free" nights. Basically if someone wants to run something they can put it on the calendar and beat the bushes for signups.
Fridays and Saturdays is when Waka and I are trying to get some ToC runs going to help people gear up alts or help undergeared mains get some upgrades. On those nights, the idea is to take people that need gear over people that don't, unless we have a few people there for the purpose of helping to carry the raid.
VoA, we try to run whenever we can. When that happens is largely dependent upon Farstriders Horde not sucking in WG at any particular moment. xD
Bottom line, we're all about getting people geared and having them raid if they want to. Tal laid out our raiding plan in his thread (which should be stickied above) so if you haven't aleady, I'd recommend reading that to get an idea of what our goals have been. For the most part, I think we're pretty inclusive about who goes on raids. The only times I personally get strict about who goes and who doesn't is when I am specifically leading a progression group where being appropriately geared is essential and I need to limit who I take. Otherwise if people want to raid, I'll take them. :)
Goodies
Some of the goodies i bring along are Jeeves (repairs and access to my bank for food/cooking supplies for others/misc stuff one might need). Jeeves also sells reagents if anyone in the raid gets low. I also have MOLL-E which is a portable mail box. I can make the good arrows and i try to carry eternal shadow on me incase anyone needs any during a run.
DO NOT!!!
log to load an add-on without making sure there's a lock portal to bring you back...especially if your the only warlock...that is all =D
Heh.
Time to do Rotface... and also time for everyone's favorite game, "Where in Azeroth is Carmen Sandiego - er, Xyro?"
Alright, Gumshoes!
My guess would be either A) In the Barrens or B) Cursing out his computer as he stares a a frozen screen, scrambling to reset and get 'back in the fight' all while hoping "Hey maybe no one noticed"
BTW, FYI, ZOMG I purchased my new graphics card yesterday, along with a few other goodies for my comp. They should be here sometime next week *crosses fingers* this better solve the problem...........
Updated
I updated the initial post with a section on how members can help the raiding effort, since so many people have asked me lately what they can do to contribute to our success as a guild. :)
Bump
Giving this a kick so it will appear on the guild index for those that are new to the guild, new to raiding, or maybe need a reminder. ;)
you're trying to make me
you're trying to make me reply to a grave dug post again aren't you!
Bring it
Let's see whatcha got. :P
All of the suggestions in
All of the suggestions in this thread are wonderful. The vent section could use an update to mumble.
Oops!
Good catch! I forgot I'd written this before we made the switch. Going to edit it right now.
Reminder on what Tal n Iky said...
I know once every so many weeks the EPGP question comes up. I think the night on Sindy everyone had the correction EPGPs installed, but unfortunately I'm sure not everyone in the guild does.
But just a reminder, there are TWO EPGP addons. One is called "EPGPLootmaster" and the other is "EPGP (dkp reloaded)" That is EXACTLY how the add-ons are spelled if your downloading them through Curse. I know there's some confusion because there are so many EPGP addons, but if you type in exactly how they look above, you can't go wrong. Obviously as mentioned above...DBM, Omen (Or equivalents) and Mumble are also required.
Have questions about Mumble set-up? Please don't wait until raid time, there are many people in the guild who are quite knowledgable about technical stuff like that.

That arrow is wrong.
It should be stopping at the first purple box. =)
About the calendar events
I got myself confused a couple of times this week. (Yay n00b.) Also, I apologize if this is all written down and I missed it. I assure you, my shame and guilt are mighty forces, and I am e-grovelling right now.
On either Monday or Tuesday (yes, I don't actually remember), I signed up for Thursday's 25-man raid as "tentative". The next day, I was going to change it from "tentative" to "signed up", but the event could no longer be modified. Is there a standard deadline for an event to be locked? (This is not a whine about not getting to raid last night -- I understand that there was a healer situation that caused things to get shuffled.)
Thank you.
I don't think they lock until
I don't think they lock until the stated time for the event is past (i.e. at 9:01 you can't sign up for an event that started at 9:00). But anything before that you should be able to change. You may have to delete your tentative and then sign up regularly though.
Signups.
I think there may be some arbitrary limit for changing details, but it sounds weird that it locked you out that early. In any case, there's no real difference between signing up as "tentative" or "signed up" in terms of your getting to go; signing up for a raid isn't a guarantee of a spot, it just means you're indicating your availability. If you're "tentative", but you show up for the raid on time and let the raid leader know you're available for the raid, that's as good as being signed up.
You can
you just need to remove yourself entirely and then sign up. you can't switch from tentative to signed up directly.
Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the tip.
