I just reached level 80 and my dps is crap. I am have a good enough GS to get into heroics like Hall of reflection but I don't ever reach higher dps then 2000 and people notice when I'm at the bottom of the barrel.

is there a special combo of abilities I need to use? I know I need more haste cause steady shot takes 1.65 sec to cast. but I'm frustrated cause I know hunters kick ass in dps and I just tell people (when they ask why I'm doing bad)  that i suck.

here's my character. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Farstriders&cn=Deadzy

Cacc and Oph..

are waaay better than I am, so I would ask them or hope they chime in. That being said..

Ditch Mourning Malice, neck thinger and palladium ring. Anything w/ Ag is better.

Plus  (and mpre importantly) you just hit 80, and others in the group probably have full t10 and ICC stuff, so I wouldn't get too upset about being out dps'd by them. I would grind out jp's and buy stuff after cata.

ok i just got replaced the

ok i just got replaced the neck with broach of the wailing night  and am working on the ring (as soon as I have more badges). I understand about the sword, it was an upgrade on what i had and am waiting for a dungeon drop . Will def talk to cacc and oph. ty for the suggestion.

maybe its like when I was playing a rogue, it wasn't until I have the best gear till I was top dps.

There are a couple of things

There are a couple of things you could do spec/gear-wise to inch up your numbers, but most of it will come down to your priorities in shots.

At the start of combat fire Serpent Sting, Chimera Shot and Arcane Shot, if you have a 100% focus bar you should be able to get all 3 of those off.

Fire steady shots until you regenerate at least 60% of your focus. If you're still at least 3 to 4 seconds from Chimera Shot coming off cooldown you can afford to fire another arcane shot then steady shot to ensure you can immediately use Chimera Shot when it's ready. You'll get a feel for the flow as you try it. The important thing is to not let serpent sting fall off, as it's wasted focus to reapply it yourself.

Only use Aimed Shot when it's a free shot.

That's pretty much the whole shibang. Never let your focus reach 100, that's a waste. Don't use Kill Command, Arcane Shot gives you double the value for the focus. The trick is getting in as many arcane shots as you can without losing the chance to use chimera shot. That will mean a lot of steady shotting too, but that's ok. Steady Shots give the improved steady shot buff for +15% haste, nothing to sneeze at.

Gear-wise I'd suggest getting your hit up to 6% so you're not missing in heroics. You'll replace the gear fast enough I don't see any reason to take issue with any of it.

The only thing I know you want that I can't very well advise you on is Mastery. It's really nice for MM, and your haste is obnoxiously high... so If I were you I'd take some of your nicer gear and change haste into mastery, wouldn't bother on anything under 232 though.
