Guild Bank

So I thought it may be useful to have a discussion about what our guild bank is, who it's for, where to put useful stuff, and perhaps what sort of stuff really isn't all that useful and is just taking up space (aka - junk). There's some information in our rules bible, but I'm hoping to add some more detail on what sort of stuff is actually useful and how it's organized.
What is the guild bank?
The guild bank is a place to keep the community property of the guild. Keeping in mind that we are a casual guild that likes to raid, we try to keep the guild bank stocked for those purposes - having fun and casual raiding. As such, you'll see various tabs with varying degrees of access and different sorts of items. It is stuff that's donated by our fellow guild members for the benefit of our other members and the guild as a whole. We're generally of the "a rising tide raises all boats" kind of mentality - what's good for one of our members is good for the guild as a whole. If you have something useful to share, by all means drop it in. See something useful that you'd like - that's what it's there for. We don't stockpile items for the fun of it or for any sort of bragging rights - we put it there to be taken by someone who can use it.
Who is it for?
Everyone! Seriously, the guild bank is there to help the guild. We do place restrictions on who can withdraw from which tab, but that's mostly to help reduce the disruptions when someone gets hacked (so the whole guild bank doesn't get ninja'd). Unfortunately with a guild as large as Natural Order is, someone getting hacked every week or two has become far too common of an occurance. Go get your authenticators people! But from a pratical standpoint that means that most of our new members are restricted to only being able to withdraw a few items a day from the 1st tab. Those that have been around a while, can generally grab stuff from the first 6 tabs. Quoting from the rules bible here: "Even if you don't have bank privileges just ask an elder for an item and they can obtain it for you. The Elder Tab is just a bit of a control on the most valuable items so new people we're not sure of yet can't just steal and vendor them. If you're with us and ask for it though, you can probably have it. Certain items at certain times may be placed on restriction by elders for regular raiders, or crafters, etc." See below for some details on restrictions per tab.
Where do I put X? or Where should I look to find Y?
Rule of thumb for all tabs - if the entire stack of your items is worth less than a few gold, and it's not something that's really hard to find, then you're probably better off just vendoring them. If you bought it from a vendor in Org, then so can anyone else - no need to keep it stored in the GB.
Tab1 - "Free For All": This is generally our 1 tab for leveling gear and mats. If it's useful and at least semi-expensive or hard to find, but not something that fits better in one of the other tabs, then this is the place. This is where you should put level 81-84 blues (ilevel 333 and less), or level 80 and less epics (blues and greens below level 80 generally aren't useful - the BOA gear is better than all the blues). Keep in mind that we aren't a leveling guild, so things like your stranglethorn and shredder pages, while somewhat hard to find, just aren't all that useful. Keep stuff like that in your personal bank if you just can't stand to see it vendored
Tab2 - "Consumables": This is where we keep our level 85 raiding consumables - the ones that aren't uber expensive. Level 85 Potions for mana, health, haste, crit, armor, strength, etc. Level 85 elixers. All level 85 food buffs and the raw meat/fish required to make them.
Tab 3 - "Tradeskills": Level 80-85 raw materials for crafting. Enchanting, Skinning, Leatherworking and Tailoring. You'll find some lower level stuff here, but we actually try not to keep that stuff stocked. Refer back to the rule of thumb when you're deciding about storing something.
Tab 4 - "Tradeskills": Level 80-85 raw materials for crafting. Mineing, Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing, Engineering, Herbalism. At the moment we seem to be full of cut level 85 green gems. That's not a bad thing to keep on hand, but there's lots more useful stuff to keep around.
Tab 5 - "Enchants": Think of it more as a gear enchancement tab. If you find it in the AH, under the Consumable -> Item Enhancement tab, then this would be the GB equivilent. Enchanting vellums will probably always make up the bulk of the stuff here, but this is also where to put stuff like armor kits, weapon scopes, spellthreads, etc. You will find a bunch of low level enchant scrolls here too - someone who can use them, please go slap them on an alt or something. There's just no reason to keep a ton of +50 health to chest scrolls.
Tab 6 - "Glyphs": Pretty self explanitory. But beyond just the standard glyphs we used to store a fair amount of ink and some of the inscription cards too. At the moment those are all pretty spendy items so they're in the elder tab, but expect that to change once we move further into the expantion.
Tab 7 - "Ask and Elder": This is our restricted place for all things expensive. If its worth more than 50g -100g this is probably the place to look. We're getting close to our 8th tab too - as full as our current "Ak and Elder" tab is, I'd expect our 8th one to go this way too. Just a note on gear - blues less than iLevel 333 belong in the first tab. Lets try to keep the gear here to only the top tier (iLevel 359) and one tier back (iLevel 346).
So what do we actually need more of?
Gems (All current colors of the level 85 blue gems - uncut works best to stack, but we can take some cut ones too)
Enchanting Materials (All current varieties - Hypnotic Dust, Celestial Essences, Heavenly Shards, and Maelstorm Crystals)
Specialty Gems (For Metas)
Armor/Leather Kits
Spellthreads
Belt Buckles
Volatiles (all kinds)
Fish Feasts/Goblin BBQ (and the raw mats to make them)
F lasks, Potions & Elixers (Haste, Mana, Health, Crit, Strength, etc)
Runescrolls + Drums (For those occasions where you just don’t have the buff any other way)
Herbs (All current varieties)
Restrictions
Tab 1 only limits people to withdrawing 5 items a day. But as stated above, if you actually have a good use for more than that, just ask.
Tab 2-6 are limited to pathfinders
Tab 7 (and presumably 8) is limited to elders.
What about those smexy looking epics in the "Ask an Elder" tab?
I'd start by referring everyone to the BOE drop policy - bascially if you see a BOE epic in the GB, make a post on our forums about it - anyone else interested should post their interest and after a 24-hour waiting policy it will be looted to the person with the highest PR - the winner will be charged GP. If it's a crafted BOE though, just ask - those are generally free, first come first served - see BOE crafted policy. If you're not sure about a particular item or don't see a craftable BOE that you're looking for - just ask.

Thx for starting this Mage
yeah I cleaned the bank up a little yesterday, especially the general tab. All I ask (and I think all the officers and most guild vets are on this as well) is PLEASE PLEASE quit putting "vendor trash" in the GB. I had to clean out ONE greasy whale milk, vendor fish attractors, ONE piece of coal and other odds and ends that really do not belong in the GB. The guild bank is cluttered as it is without these items so please help us out on this by keeping these things out :)
Just a couple of things quickly
Ikuri renamed the tabs a while back and it should be pretty clear what belongs where. If we want to rename tabs or shove stuff around, I'm open to that, I don't think we need a whole tab for recipes and schematics.
There are no epic gems in the game yet, but I take your point. We also keep glyphs in the bank. We also need to keep lavascale catfish, highland guppies, and fathom eel onhand--those are the mats for the Seafood Magnifique aka Shiny Group Feast. It's also nice to keep herbs onhand for flask making (and we do have them currently) and cauldron making.
And yes, thank you for starting this Mage.
I'm certainly more than willing to help keep crap out of the first tab.
I would also say that we mostly don't want any potion/flask/pot that isn't from this expansion. Do we need to keep non-Cata crafting materials onhand? Might be nice to have a primal might or two, but I'd say in general we don't need BC, Wrath, or Vanilla stuff in the bank, meaning no light leather, no primal life, etc.
I think...
...it depends on the rarity. Primal Might, Khorium, things that are actually reasonably difficult to farm/create, I wouldn't mind seeing in the guild bank. Something that someone can pick up in 20 minutes of flying around a lowbie zone, definitely not.
Herbs might be worth making a slight exception for, because of glyphs. There are certain tiers of pre-WOTLK and Cat herbs that are used in some important glyphs, and so it might not be a bad idea to have some of those, or the inks, on hand for when someone respecs. Might be more efficient than storing glyphs, to be honest, and I imagine at least a few of the scribes in the guild are approaching 100%.
good point
I think there's at least three scribes that have 100%. Mine is just missing the Colossus Smash glyph, and I need to figure out why I can't seem to get it. Good point about the inks though. Outland herbs and even Wrath have been out of sight on the ah. And yes, Khorium for sure is worth keeping around.
Glyph of Colossus Smash...
...is learned from the WOTLK glyph book; grab one off the AH next time they're not ridiculously priced (or I'll send you the next one I come across) and you'll have everything.
Thanks, Mage
Well-written. As a former guild bank officer from my own guild, I did a lot of reading on this subject. Mage is right on. Having a thread on what we need and what we don't need in there is hugely helpful and keeps it fresh.
Maybe the Rules Bible regarding the bank is a little out of date and could be amended.
The most common concern of guild banks is clutter. It is partially warranted.
The most common error or failing of guild banks is lack of participation, especially people being afraid of taking stuff out. Besides the "Ask An Elder" tab I'd like to see a more "if you need it, take it" attitude fostered.
Good write-up
I like the set-up Mage suggested since it pretty much mirrors what I've already been doing in trying to keep things organized. I'm going to start going through the bank and removing things that have sat there too long (again) and I would encourage others to do the same when the opportunity presents itself (within reason of course)
I wasn't trying to show
I wasn't trying to show anything differently than what we're doing now (I'll let you all discuss that amoung the officers if necessary) - just trying to document the way we're doing it now. If I messed up any details or something, let me know.
I should say that the GB looks great now - thx for cleaning that out
Thanks!
I think it's great! And thanks! I've been trying whenever I get a chance. :)
