Also, this: Blizzard was teasing us all along.

A little while ago in the Azeroth Bulletin which we reported here, this was posted:

Bulletin said: Speaking to a small conglomerate of various Alliance representatives, Mekkatorque pointed out that the time to strike is now. After all, Thermaplugg has eluded death for years to keep his reign over Gnomeregan; and with the fall of the Lich King, the last great threat to the citizens of Azeroth, the chance of any cataclysmic event taking place in the foreseeable future is "less than 12.7%," Mekkatorque's leading combat medical advisor Doc Cogspin purported.

12.7%? 12-7? CURSE YOU BLIZZARD FOR RUBBING IT IN OUR FACES!!!

Oh My...

Pearl Harbor Day - Although that was more of a disaster.

Cataclysm + all 11-12 million WoW players logging in at once - epic failure.

To me it is in bad taste to

Ophirrah's picture

To me it is in bad taste to do it that day but not like i can stop them

How is it in bad taste?

Not sure why you object

12/7/41 Pearl Harbor was

Ophirrah's picture

12/7/41 Pearl Harbor was bombed.  Destroyed many lives that day.  To me it is bad taste to put out a expansion based on the destruction of the old world on a day that so many lives were destroyed.

I get the historical significance, but...

Ogg's picture

to me, there is a difference between remembering a momentous event in American History, and letting it control how we live our lives. I'm not saying that the bombing of Pearl Harbor is not worthy of remembrance or reverence. I just don't think that the release of an xpac for a video game should be taken as commentary on, or in any way related to, the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

I think that's an

Cacciatore's picture

I think that's an overreaction. I can't come up with a way to respond without sounding like I'm pointing fingers or being irreverent, which isn't my intent. Basically we can't adjust our lives around every bad thing that happens. Bad things also lead to good things, and we need to be respectful of the past, but not wind our lives around it. When 9/11 passed this year I didn't watch the news, I didn't read anything about it. I was certainly aware of the day, but I want my 9/11 to just be a day, a day I can be myself and do things I would do on 9/10 and 9/12.

Agreed

There are a few dates that we (America) don't think about or honor enough. Pearl Harbor (12/7,) 9/11, D-Day (6/6,) Hiroshima,  (8/6,) Start of the Civil War (5/12) and all of the major religious holidays of the top ten religions practiced today...5/15 would also be uncool as that's the day the Titanic sunk.

I have have been to a number of the Civil War battlefields (sister majored in American History) and Antietam scared me spit-less. It's just a field and a farm house but, damn. I've been to the WTC site before and after and remains and debris will be found all over NYC for decades to come every time a building is renovated or torn down. My historian sister has been to the Arizona memorial in Hawaii and it still bubbles. The Japanese say these are the escaping souls of those who were trapped and died. My brother has been to Japan and Hiroshima. All he will say is that it is one of the most lovely and tragic places he's ever been. (I've seen the Enola Gay and where the bomber sat was creepy.)

With the exception of 9-11, the average person has very little or no clue about these events or the ones Emrys mentioned.

No, life doesn't need to come to a halt but unlike a sporting event, play or concert, but you can't do a moment of silence before Cata. Once these events are trivialized we forget the lessons they taught us.

In my mind, finally, it all boils down to the pairing of the date and the title of the game. IMHO.

So many people are pre-ordering the game so would it really kill people to release the game on Weds 12/8 or Tues 12/14?

Actually...

Ogg's picture

The Titanic sunk on 4/15... it's also Tax Day in the US, the anniversary of the Belfast Blitz, the anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen and the anniversary of the death of my ancestor, George Calvert, who was more or less responsible for the founding of Maryland.

How do I know that? It's also my birfday. I can has cake?

Uh...

Flynn's picture

...why is it up to Blizzard to provide a moment of silence?  Why can't we just allow everyone to observe the date in their own way?  What's the lesson we're forgetting about Pearl Harbor?  Not to put all our money in battleships?  I don't think we've forgotten that one.

No one's trivializing Pearl Harbor by not spending the entire day in sackcloth and ashes weeping and tearing at their hair.

I just think they could have

Ophirrah's picture

I just think they could have picked a different date.  I have strong feelings about things like this.  I guess being military for so long I am a bit sensitive towards things on dates like this, veterans day, memorial day, etc...

To me its just disrespectful

It's somewhat similar to...

...having the Scourge knock Dalaran out of the sky on 9/11.

right, that would be in

Ophirrah's picture

right, that would be in really bad taste

Other dates.

December 28, 1908 - Earthquake in Messina, Italy kills 50,000

January 4, 1998 - 170 people are massacred in a series of attacks in Algeria

January 11, 1962 - Avalanche in Peru kills 4,000

January 25, 1999 - Colombian earthquake kills 1,000

February 1, 1814 - Phillipine volcano eruption kills 1,200

Crap guys I'm having trouble finding a release date that would be in good taste.

Its just there are several

Ophirrah's picture

Its just there are several dates in US history that should be respected.  I am not saying everytime someone dies make it so an expansion cant be released.. Im simply saying a US company should respect US history.  If Bliz was a Canadian company (chuckle) then I would understand them not respecting significant US history dates.

I don't see...

Flynn's picture

...why shipping a video game on December 7th is in any way disrespectful.  There were no dragons involved in Pearl Harbor, or volcanoes.  No battleships are getting bombed in Cataclysm.  If you went to any of the living veterans of the attack and told them a video game was being shipped on the anniversary that didn't have anything to do with the attack, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't actually care.

@Ophirra

Ogg's picture

Thanks for explaining why you thought it was disrespectful. I still disagree with you, but I appreciate your conscientious response. I didn't mean for this to turn into a debate on the importance of respecting certain dates over others.

no you are right... I seem to

Ophirrah's picture

no you are right... I seem to be on a soap box today and need to get off it... It is a game and it shouldnt be influenced by real life..

Nah

Ogg's picture

We're all real people with real lives, and that necessarily influences how we see and approach the game. Without real life, there would be no game. Even if you're getting off the soapbox for now, keep it handy. I feel like I learned something about you (and likely others who share your point of view) today, and I'm better for it.

Yeah.

Flynn's picture

Don't worry about us disagreeing with your point of view.  God knows we've got enough varied viewpoints in this guild, and I certainly respect your perspective on the holiday and will understand if you start your Cat experience on the 8th.  I'm certainly going to observe the anniversary myself, but I'll spend the rest of the day fighting stuff in Mount Hyjal.  :)

I see your point too Ophirra

and I think it has to do in part with those who served and those who did not (and no I am not putting those that did not serve down in anyway or saying that they fail to understand/appreciate certain dates in military history). I think for some if not all of us who served certain perceptions are changed in how we view things, especially when it comes to dates that recognize fallen soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

Signing that dotted line means that your willing to give your life for your contry, and it is very sobering sometimes to think of all men and women who had done so in years previous.
