Blizzard Entertainment is proud to announce the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, a major global eSports event featuring some of the best pro-gaming competition in the world. Slated to take place in Asia toward the end of 2012, the Battle.net World Championship will host this year’s StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments. Blizzard gamers and eSports fans from around the world will be invited to attend and witness some of the most skilled pro players on the planet battle it out for cash and glory.

We’re excited to be showcasing Blizzard eSports on a truly global stage this year. We're also heavily focused on getting Diablo III, Mists of Pandaria, and Heart of the Swarm into players’ hands as soon as possible. In light of our jam-packed schedule, we’ve decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013.

More details about the 2012 Battle.net World Championship and BlizzCon 2013, including specific dates and locations, will be coming in the months ahead.

Hasn't blizcon been a standing event for the better part of the last decade?

Blizz missing an opportunity to show off really suprises me.  My guess, one of the higher ups drank the aztec calendar/2012 coolaid.

I think with the launch of

I think with the launch of their new event plus having so many irons in the fire right now, they're saying they just don't have the wherewithal to do everything they want to do.  BlizzCon is a known thing, so they wanna focus on bringing the talent that makes that happen to their new venue to get it started and work out the bugs as it goes through its first steps.  Its a big freakin' deal.  They just might not have enough people they can rely on right now to handle running all of that, so they've decided to scale back.  By putting it off this year they give themselves time to bring in new people and have them ready to hit the ground running for next year.

At least that's what it sounds like to me.

Considering that Diablo 3

Considering that Diablo 3 will be out, and Heart of the Swarm and Mists of Pandaria will likely be in open beta by this October, they really won't have any big reveals to "WOW" people into coming/watching Blizzcon this year. From what I understand, Blizzard holds Blizzcon at a loss every year. They recoup some expense from ticket sales, but not enough to cover the full cost of the event. The biggest thing Blizzcon gets them is PR when they announce upcoming products. But this year (since I guess Titan isn't ready to see the light of day yet), they've got no real incentive to keep Blizzcon on the schedule.

That's very optimistic of you. You haven't been a fan of Blizzard for long have you?

I'm just hoping D3 is out by then. I'd be surprised if the other two have a closed Beta.

I know Blizz has a reputation

I know Blizz has a reputation for long development times, but that's been reigned in a lot by Activision. Looking at the development schedule for WotLK and Cataclysm, both were in beta and had the NDA lifted within a year of being announced at their respective Blizzcons. I don't expect Heart of the Swarm  or Mists of Pandaria to be any different. In all likelihood, both those games are in the "Family & Friends" in-house alpha stages right now and will be opened to selective beta testing this spring/summer, with the NDA lifted before the fall.
