Recently got into aquariums and freshwater fish. Bought this nice tank at Thanksgiving and made the cherry stand it is on (just put it all together this weekend). It isnt fully planted and no fish yet (still cycling it basically), but I did handcraft the stand just to get this badge! (ok, ok, its really for the fish).
I am doing a fishless cycle, which involves using ammonia to grow the bacteria (in the gravel, in the filter etc) that convert ammonia to nitrites then to nitrates.
Feels like being back in Biology, bought test tubes and test kits to check the levels of above.
Some use cheap or very hardy fish for cycling a new tank, but the ammonia the fish generates (from wastes) is quite toxic to them, basically your poisoning your fish until the bacterial colonies are sufficient in # to break down the waste. That can take up to a month to get enough to make the tank safe (cycled) for fish; its shortened a bit by using stuff from established tanks (basically seeds the aquarium with the beneficial bacteria).
I have another small aquarium (only 6 gallons) which I plan to convert into a shrimp only aquarium, no fish. There are these cute little red shrimp...
I'll post some pics with fish once I have them in, thinking cardinal tetras (like better looking neons) and perhaps something like a Dwarf Gourami. And a bristlenose Pleco (cause catfish are cute). The shrimp-scape is next after this 25g is finished. Right now that tank has 5 fish (Danios, Otto-cats) and ghost shrimp which I will move over to the 25g.
Cardinals:
One type of gourami (don't know what I can get yet, just like the looks of this one):
Bristlenose Pleco - lots of different ones of these, some albinos even. I like this one, but no guarantees I'll find one.
The shrimp tank will have these guys below, I have about 15 in a 10g planted tank with small fish that won't eat them, they are like mini-lobsters and tasty to bigger fish.
oo me, I built like a rabbit

And after you've got the tank ready
