Morheime announced that all WoW players who "commit to 12 months" (but they're still billed montly), sort of like a Cell phone contract will get the digital version of Diablo III absolutely free when it releases.

The commit to 12 month option should be available as early as today.

I'd read somewheres that you have to continue to play WoW to play D3 after the year. Not sure, but it seems like what Blizzard would do.

That doesn't make much sense. It's more likely that if you cancel, they will either still bill monthly until the year is out or you'll be charged the remaining amount (up to the year) when you cancel.

Not true, as long as you lock in for a year of subs (which you can still pay on monthly) you get the game free, no other strings attached.

I think this is a great deal for people thinking about getting D3. Especially for Claera who wanted to try playing D3 with me (As I enjoyed D2 so much) but wasn't sure if she would like it. Saved us having to buy two copies with subscriptions we likely would have had anyways.

What I don't get is why. The mount and beta access are great tools at Blizz's disposal for stuff like this and make sense, but a free copy of D3? It seems to me they should be losing money on this deal. Unless they don't think there's a lot of overlap between WoW players and people who would buy D3 anyways and are trying to pad the numbers to make the launch more successful. Or they think the cash auction house will be enough of a long term money maker for them as long as they can get people playing the game and using it. Only other reason I can think of is they expect to be losing a lot of WoW subscriptions at some point over the next 12 months (SWTOR/Secret World?) and are trying to keep people around, perhaps until MoP hits.

So speculate with me people, Blizz is a company and wants to make money. What do they get out of this?

Edit: Also, unless 4.3 is next Tuesday they should really be giving people the mount now, so people in game can see it and want it.

Protecting the subscriber base

This is all about protecting the WoW subscriber base. There is going to be a huge media blitz when SW:TOR comes out and they think it is smart business to lock up as many subscribers before people are making the decision to play that game or not.

Except many people have already made the decision to stay or go or play both games so I am not sure how effective it will be.

It's easy for me, I've had the 6 month WoW sub since day one and if nothing else I am a creature of inertia :p Be fun to try D3, I've never played the series before.

it's the normal version of the game. Granted they may lose a little buy, but I bet they know that alot of the ppl that signed up for this will still get the Collector's Edition of D3. Hell I'm thinking about it.
