Alterac Valley...a classic that needs work.

I was wandering around all the different forums today and I came across this gem.  I remember in classic WoW with old school Alterac Valley the battles could sometimes take 9 hours or longer and they were truly some epic fights.  Now you have todays AV and its just a race to the boss and who can kill him first.  This guy on the WoW forums named Foury has some really fantastic ideas on how to bring AV back to its former glory and give those of us that remember this place a taste of how epic those battles once were.

WARNING: This post is extremely long, but well worth the read.

Odd...

It didn't do that for me when I clicked on the link.  If you do get to it, check it out.  Really great ideas for AV, would really bring back some great old PvP like how it used to be in that place.

I love...

...how he wants the Alliance side buffed (Balinda tougher, more mobs in Vann's room) but curiously doesn't say anything about the differences in terrain...

Not a perfect plan...

I would just love to get classic AV back.  We did one AV where we summoned Lok and pushed them all the way back to their base and they fought us off and killed Lok, summoned the tree dude they get and almost beat us but we pushed back and took them.  AV just is pathetic now, with work they could make it like it used to be and fix the issues on both sides, Horde and Alliance.  They guy does have some decent ideas in his long post.

He does...

...I'd just take him more seriously if he brought up the archer towers Hordeside or the terrain advantage.  Essentially, he wants old AV back, but one geared even more toward Alliance wins.

Yeah I miss the old style as well

Use to love just sitting on defense with my hunter and killing Alliance at our stronghold at the choke point.

*Sniff* Those were the days.

Yup!

It's how my hunter made Senior Sergeant.  Good times.

General's Room

I used to stand at the back of the General's room and ping away at the Alliance invaders, trying to spoil or delay any organized attack on the General.   If I died I'd use the AV trinket which pops you into the Horde base and zip back in.  I like to think I annoyed the heck out of the Alliance.

Good times.

That's nothing

Horde complains for 6 years map is imbalanced. Blizzard changes nothing.

After map changes in late TBC, Alliance complains for 1 week that Horde starting area is too close. Half of map is changed.

Really funny reading the

Really funny reading the imbalance remarks, since they're very similar to the remarks I heard constantly on the Alliance side in my old battlegroup. It tends to stem from who's getting rolled at the moment.

Those allies were complainers

Rejad's picture

Those allies were complainers then because I've done this BG multiple times on both sides and doing it Alliance is by far more easy to do.  If both sides are generally equal, Alliance has the advantage.  The Allies base is one continuous area, Horde's is two seperate areas, and the first part you can bypass most of the NPC's.  Plus the archerer thing.  Allies archerers harrass you the second you get near their area.  Not so for the Horde's.

Allies win by default.  Horde only wins in two ways; they just steamroll the Allies due to gear disadvantage or Horde is actually smart (HA!) and plays defense.  Playing defense doesn't matter if Allies have a level and gear advantage, the same pretty much holds true vice versa.  But if sides are equal Horde only wins by going defense and dragging out the fight.  If they break the Allies zerg at Galv, Horde pretty much wins after 20-30 minutes of reinforcement attrition, because after the Ally wipe at Galv Horde will have a number advantage on reinforcements.

This almost never happens as Horde does not play well with others.  The moment you suggest defense half the team complains "takes too long" and zergs like idiots towards Allies boss and defeat.  I guess they don't realize that its more points to have a 40 minute victory than two 8 minute defeats with 20-30 minute wait ques in between.  They also don't realize that when you do defense it becomes apparent very quickly that you have or don't have a level and gear advantage.  Once it becomes apparent you're steamrolling them, just change to zerg then for the quick win.  Plus its suppose to be PvP, not another fucking grind.  I'd rather be in battle for 40 minutes than having short and quick ones and then sit around Org in que.

*sigh*

We are not talking about AV how it is now.

In the link I provided with the really, really long description we are talking about the old AV.  If you played this game back when max level was 60 and there were no queue's to sit your butt in and wait for something to happen, you remember when South Shore and Tarren Mill had epic battles every damn day it seemed.  If you were unlucky enough to be trying to level up during this time you were hosed.  Right around this time is when they brought AV into the game and it was some of the best epic battles ever, I know I personally have been in some that were over 9 hours long.  I logged off one time and came back and it was still going, the same battle.  The OP of the link is a bit Alliance biased but his ideas could be put to Horde side as well and make AV back to what it was and not this candy assed race where there is no PvP involved.

Alliance base isn't

Cacciatore's picture

Alliance base isn't continuous, there's a cut through the mountain on the left side that puts you right up at the flag. The alliance always complained they they were bottlenecked at Icewing Bunker (8), to the horde's credit it was a flawless stradegy when used, where there is no such bottleneck on the horde side aside from the base itself. Despite that I see the horde lose here as often as I saw the alliance lose elsewhere. When you're talking about 40 random people you either need someone to step up and lead, and others to follow, or you just have 40 random people doing what they want, and one side or another will eventually get lucky.
